Whether you run a windows operating system or you're a Linux user, you've probably heard of telnet. For those of you who haven't heard of telnet, allow me to briefly explain..
Telnet is a protocol that allows you to connect to remote computers and issue commands. A Telnet "client" is used to connect to a Telnet "server" on another machine.
Well what can we do with it that is fun and entertaining? Many things actually! But the purpose of this article is to explain specifically how to watch star wars through telnet.
If you are a Windows user simply follow the below steps...
- Open the start menu
- Select Run
- In the run box type Telnet
A window similar to this will pop up..
- At the prompt type "o" without the quotations and push the enter key
- Type in "towel.blinkenlights.nl" without quotation marks and hit enter again
- It should connect and this will pop up
For Linux users it's quite the same. Simply open a Terminal window and type in "Telnet", Then you will type an "o" the same as described for Windows users and press the enter key.
It will then display another prompt, Do the same as above for Windows users. Simply type in the same address as above and press enter. It should connect and you can enjoy Star Wars!
In your Linux terminal it should look similar to this..
It is all using the same protocol so it really doesn't matter what operating system you're running as long as you have a telnet client installed. If you're unsure if you have a client installed or if these step by step instructions didn't work for you for some reason, you can download a great little client called "Putty" that will do the job just as good as this and it is pretty straight forward.
Telnet is a neat little tool and there are many other places you can connect! So if you're bored to death and need an awesome way to kill some time... This should suffice.
