How to wire a light fixture

By | Aug 28, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Wiring a light fixture is relatively easy but there are some steps that you must take. Most lights running on a standard 120 circuit are wired the same so here's some tips to wiring up a light fixture whether you are replacing or adding a new one.

Things You Will Need

You will need:

Wire strippers

wire, 14/2

wire nuts

To wire the light fixture you need to first purchase the fixture which you are installing. This may be a new fixture or one you had around the house. Most light fixtures come with 3 wires, a hot a neutral and a ground. The fixture will be wired up the same way as the wires you see coming out of the box. the white wire goes to white, the black to black and the green to green. Black is the hot wire and will go to the brass screw, the neutral is the white wire and goes to the silver screw and the ground goes to the green screw. Once the wires are tied together your next step is to mount the light. Lights generally are mounted to junction boxes and the box will have screws to hold the light in place. these need to be screwed down with the screws supplied with the light. The wires should be stripped to about 3/8" and twisted snuggly into the wire nut. tape can be used to wrap around the wires, use electrical tape only. Make sure all power is off before starting any electriical project.

Electrical appliances are pretty easy to install, lights and electrical outlets are the norm and you can save alot of money following these tips.
