Human Sexuality
Sexuality and sexual activity are not the same thing. Sexuality refers to a person's view of himself or herself as a male or female. It involves more than physical maturity or the ability to be sexually active.
Sexuality includes how people feel about themselves and their sense of responsibility for and understanding of other people and their feelings. Thus, sexuality has physical, intellectual, emotional, and social aspects.
Individuals show their sexuality in various ways. They show their maleness or femaleness in the attitudes, in the way they walk, talk, move, and dress. During adolescence boys and girls begin to develop a sense of their own sexuality. Chemicals in the body called hormones dictate changes as teens become sexually mature. These changes often have an emotional , as well as physical impact. They can cause mood swings and emotional ups and downs.
Dating as couples or in groups can help discover which qualities or characteristics in another person they find desirable. They can learn more about building relationships. By drawing on ones own values, a person can choose to build a sense of their own sexuality without becoming sexually active.
Decisons related to sexuality are very important for any male or female. However, music, television, radio, movies and advertising often convey the messages that sexual activity is a necessary part of sexuality.
In can be helpful to discuss decisions about sexuality with other people. While teens often turn to friends for advice, most teens can benefit from talking to a responsible adult.Trusted adults, a parent, an older family member, a religious leader, an adult friend, a school counselor, or a doctor can be valuable resources.
