Hypnosis for Childbirth using HypnoBirthing Techniques

By | 2 Comments | Rating: 1 | |

Although the term hypnobirthing might sound new and strange in today's society, it is based on old principles that help a woman relax through childbirth. In fact, it is a form of self hypnosis and in the medical field hypnosis has been proven to be effective in pain relief. Due to the stampede of new medical advancements, old techniques sometime fall through cracks only to be rediscovered again at a later time. For women who are investigating going through labor by way of natural birth delivery process, hypnobirthing is certainly something to investigate.

Hypnobirthing, or hypnosis for childbirth, was based on a book published in 1944 by obstetrician Dr. Grantly Dick-Read called Childbirth Without Fear. Later on, Marie F. Mongan took these teachings and adopted the term hypnobirthing, or the Morgan Method. What hypnobirthing teaches is exactly what the book describes: to go through the childbirth process without fear.

It can be said that society has created a dependency on drugs. If we don't have it, we cannot possibly cope with the pain of the birth process - even though the women of generations past coped just fine without medicinal intervention. Due to the fear that women have adopted regarding the birthing process, it generates a self fulfilling prophecy. Fear leads to muscle tension which leads to pain. Hypnobirthing breaks this pattern by rejecting all negative thoughts associated with birthing. Hypnobirthing has deep relaxation techniques which allow the mother to release her own natural endorphins to combat the discomfort. If a woman is in fear, the adrenaline would act to counteract the endorphins and therefore, the mother has to trust her body enough that it will do its job and she will be okay.

Hypnobirthing might seem to be a leap of faith from the proven effects of an epidural. However, a natural childbirth using hypnosis is the best for the mother and child. The actual labor of women using hypnobirth techniques are much shorter in time than average, which gives the mother more energy to interact with her baby once delivered. The baby is also much calmer and relaxed because that is the world he/she entered. Without the effects of drugs, the baby also scores high on Apgar tests.

The natural childbirth methods are alive and well and with hypnobirthing gaining popularity, women are learning that pain need not necessarily accompany childbirth. Hypnobirthing has the techniques that a woman needs to conquer the fear of childbirth.
