IRS Audits and How to Prepare For Them
The IRS audits people every day. But that does not mean people get audited every day. And that is why people get scared when they receive a notice of audit from the IRS. But relax and realize that you will survive the process. But remember to be prepared when you meet with the auditing agent.
The best time to avoid an audit is when you are preparing your taxes. If you know you have deductions that are questionable include as much documentation as possible. Receipts of course are necessary. But also include the IRS code you are relying on for your deduction.
And remember the main reason for the audit is the IRS has to check a predetermined number of returns every year. So you might be simply a random choice needed to fulfill their quota. Even so, it is always best to seek help with IRS audit procedures. A trained accountant or tax lawyer will make sure that you avoid making any simple mistakes that could cost you money. The IRS audit process is just as convoluted as filling out your tax forms, so consider having an expert by your side.
The IRS does not have to prove you have to prove. This means that you have to show why you took the deduction and that it was within their code. They do not have to show you why you could not take the deduction. So understand that you have to be the one ready to prove your case.
Do not be late to your appointment. The auditing agent has a schedule to meet. If you mess up his schedule he will be annoyed from the beginning. Also, he has only a certain amount of time to meet with you. If you are not there on time he will spend more time reviewing your return. The best idea is to arrive early.
