The 80's are back! Everyone these days is getting nostalgic and throwing decade themed parties. The 80's were all about having fun and letting loose through use of bright colors in fashions, poppy music, and cheesy movies. An 80's themed party is perfect for birthdays and all sorts of celebrations.

The invitations will set the tone for the party. Indicate whether or not this is a costume party, if food will be provided, if games will played, and if there is dancing. E-vites, or internet invitations are perfect for the budget concious. There are many websites that even provide inviation templates or you can make your own. Stick with bright colors, bubble letters, and remnants of 80's pop culture such as atari style video games, cassette tapes, and rubix cubes.

Just as the 80's were loud and obnoxious, so should the decoartions. Balloons in colors like red, yellow, and turquoise are a good start. Using a bunch of old cassette tapes and hanging them by string or fishing wire from the ceiling, make interesting alternatives to streamers. Place rubix cubes and other 80's board games. Hang up classic movie posters from the 80's such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Ghostbusters, Back to The Future, The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing, etc. If you have a television in the same area as where you are throwing the party, have these same movies playing in the background. Search on Ebay or even Etsy for 80's themed cups and plates with such things as PacMan, E.T. and Ghostbusters.

There are so many different unique looks that can be used for an 80's costume. Whichever look you go for, the whole point is to go overboard. Anything you do, do it in excess. Several ideas include the Madonna like a virgin look, the 80's metal hairband rocker, the Miami Vice look, the Dynasty/Soap Opera look or the fitness guru. Also there are many 80's movie character costume ideas such as Ferris Bueller, Ghostbusters character, Marty McFly from Back to the Future, PeeWee Herman, and Risky Business.

The music is what is really going to tie the party together. Put a lot of thought into the music you are going to play, and make sure that is a good representation of the 80's genre and not just one band (i.e. Journey). Many music websites like Pandora or iTunes already have 80's mixes ready to go and there are countless CD's available with 80's mixes as well. If you would like to make your own 80's mix, here are some essential songs to include.
