5 Reasons You are Not Successful
I am writing this article because I believe that there are thousands of miserable people in this world who don't understand why they are broke, locked in to their job, and have no clue why they are unhappy. One of the most important things you can do to become happy and successful is to understand why you are not already successful. In this article I will tell you the top 5 reasons you are not successful. If you are not ready to hear this, then you should stop reading now.
1. Your definition of success sucks
I know, I know, you are a little upset. I get it. but please understand that I am not putting you down. Let me explain...
Millions of people around the world are working their tail off chasing other people's dreams, and working towards someone else's version of success. This is absurd. The idea of working towards societies idea of "making it", If it does not line up with your own set of moral/life values and priorities, will simply "make it" harder to be happy.
We as individuals, need to take the time to sit back and form our own definition of success, taking into account our own core values and priorities in life. When we do this we see a clearer picture of what we consider success to be.
2. You don’t know where you want to be...
Because you have not properly outlined what "making it" will look like for your life, you don't know where you want to be. Think of it like this, if success was a destination, and you were trying to get there but had no clue where it was on the map, or what it would look like when you got there, how could you ever attempt to find it?
You can't! You will be wandering aimlessly and wasting energy on random ventures that do not bring you any closer to where you want to be.
Therefore by defining what success means to us individually, we now can find it on the map of life...
3. You have to know where you are going to get to where you want to be...
If you are venturing out to the great unknown, taking the risk of becoming successful, and attempting to chase your dreams, you had better get a map. If you attempt this without a map you are far less likely to reach your destination.
Now, lets just say that you have stopped and taken action in between each of these points. You will have, (1) Created your own definition of success around your values and priorities, and (2) made it recognizable and understand its location. Now you are ready to develop a set of goals, and then develop a plan to achieve those goals.
The cool thing about this is that now, you have the ability to make specific, and intentional goals that bring you closer to your destination. If the goals that you write dont point toward your destination then you need to get rid of them.
If you are someone who has always had trouble developing an intentional set of goals, then you may benefit by reading a book called Goal Setting: 13 Secrets of World Class Achievers
The strange thing is that I have been told about goal setting and planning many times by Glendon Cameron at Storage Auction Shogun. This is more than a website about storage auctions, it is a website about entrepreneurs , dream chasers, and anyone looking to improve your life, business or financial situations. That being said, I realize that it is easy to make these goals and put them on a shelf and forget about them. Remember, "no great thing was ever easy"...
4. You don't push through...
I know, this is easier said than done. I know it's not easy. If it was easy then everyone would be successful! It is now time to get the "it's just too hard" mentality out of your head.
On this trip you will make, there will be roadblocks. There will be failures, and problems that stretch you to the very brink of your existence. In order to reach your destination you will have to push through. Sometimes this means that you will have to sacrifice. Other times you will have to problem solve. And more often than not, you will have to turn angst into action! Look at how far you have come already and tell yourself, out loud, that its worth it!
5. You are scared...
You are scared of the responsibilities of becoming successful, scared of the risk, and scared of change. I understand the fear. I am terrified a lot. I have a wife and two kids to take care of and sometimes the fear all but crushes me. The problem with fear, is that, it has the ability to paralyze us and keep us from reaching our full potential, but only if we allow it!
So, how do we beat fear?
My suggestion is to find an accountability partner that you can trust. Share your goals and your plans with him or her, and ask them to hold you accountable. They should have an up to date goal list and your plan to achieve said goals. Once you have your accountability partner locked in you can set up weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly meetings to discuss progress.
Remember when G.I. Joe said that "knowing is half the battle" ? He was on the right track! What we have discussed here today already puts you ahead of the pack. You have identified the 5 areas that most people can't conquer. Knowing allows you to formulate a plan of attack! Good luck to you in all that you do. I hope this has been helpful.
