Ice Cream Wholesale
Ice cream is virtually synonymous with hot summer months when almost everyone looks forward to the exciting cool taste. Depending on where you live, there are many ice cream locations which are open all year long but are usually more vibrant during the summer. But as some are simply looking to stock up on a few gallons of ice cream, there are those who are looking to get into the ice cream business. We have all seen the stores that sell ice cream in our neighborhood and also the trucks selling different brands of home-made ice cream such as the famous Ben-and-Jerry. There are many American ice cream household names other than Ben-and-Jerry. Selling ice cream can be a very lucrative business. It involves buying wholesale and then repackaging and selling in small quantities for a profit.
The business works along the same lines as other retail businesses. There are a few rules and regulations that one must play by in order to be successful. One has to familiarize themselves with the business world as pertaining to wholesale retail learning the systems involved and even the tools that are commonly used. Sometimes one has to even check with the more established retailers in the area. Buying at a low ice cream wholesale price and then turning around and selling high is what the business is all about and learning how to do this determines whether the business will be deemed a success.
The necessary tools are required before one can embark on the ice cream business. For one, a freezer is a must. This is where the wholesale ice cream will be stored as it awaits repackaging. Then there are other accessories such as the ice cream stand, the display unit, the slab and more. It all depends on your business model. Then there are the various machineries used to whip the ice cream and dispense it into the containers. Questions must also be asked pertaining to whether your business will be a store, a stand or a mobile truck that can travel from one location to another. Will you lease the truck or do you have an existing truck that can be modified for this purpose? Then you have to ask yourself whether there is demand for ice cream in the particular region where you live. How many competitors are there?
Before starting out in this business, there are also some important things you must familiarize yourself with. It is recommended that one joins a business support group of some sort. These are generally found in your city's chamber of commerce website or the local small business associations that exist. These groups offer support as to how to find suppliers, how to calculate costs, where to buy merchandise cheap and also where to get financing. They are educating on such vitals as billing, marketing research and more. All these are things that a small business needs in order to survive. Assessing one's business goals is also critical.
We mentioned earlier the tools and equipment that needs to be purchased to ensure that your business is successful. We talked about the stands, the machinery and the freezer equipment but this is not all. There are smaller accessories that are critical to your business. Consider things like plastic cups, holders, cones, plastic forks and spoons, paper-towels, plates and more. All these depend on the type of ice cream you are selling and how many customers you are getting. Then there is the critical aspect of funding. Are you self-financing? If yes how far are you willing to go to finance your business? Will you also be getting outside financing from a bank? Do you have collateral?
Research also needs to be conducted regarding the business model you are trying to establish. What are the prevalent prices in your area? Are you too overpriced to become attractive to buyers? Or are you too under-priced to become profitable? Do you have an accurate assessment of your costs? What about your market? How long would you stay in business in a recession?
Then one has to square out transportation issues. If one has a store, transportation is not such a major issue because the suppliers usually worry about transport. But if the ice cream is being sold out of a truck then there are logistical issues that need to be considered. Then off course there is the legal part of it. Your business will need to get the necessary permits and licenses to sell ice cream. These ensure that your business complies with all local and municipal laws.
