Ideas for Affordable Furniture

By Edited Dec 19, 2013 0 0

Affordable furniture allows you to redecorate your home even if you have a tiny budget. However, it's also going to require that you be creative. Sometimes you might really have to go with pieces that otherwise wouldn't be your first choice but are still going to be quite functional.

You might just want to stay away from the furniture store because this is usually going to be your most expensive option. Instead, try shopping at a lot of box stores. These include places like Target, IKEA, and even Walmart. Whenever you shop at box stores you need to consider how much time you're willing to spend to save money. Oftentimes, you're going to have to assemble these pieces and if it's something like a bookshelf or a dining room table it can take you several hours and it just might not be worth it.

Another consideration that you're going to run into when you shop at box stores is going to be quality. While end tables can be fun to change around a lot and fairly inexpensive you might want to spend a little bit more money on other furniture pieces in your room. This includes your sofa. You don't want to get a piece that's going to quickly break down over time. The foam quality is important in these pieces. You can just pick one area in your room to spend most of your budget and then use a lot of less expensive accent furniture.

Another section of the store that you can really go into is going to be garden furniture. Right now we are seeing a lot of porcelain garden stools. This can be great for indoor or outdoor use and can even double as an end table. It can have a slightly Asian or a modern flair depending on how you style the rest of your room.

You are also going to want to be on the lookout for accent tables. If you got an entire garden furniture set even if it was a dining room table and chairs, it would still be noticeable as garden furniture. However, you can try out a few of these less expensive items on a budget. In this case, you might just want to go for a mosaic end table or even a mosaic dining table and then pair it with more traditional interior chairs for balance.

Another aspect that's really important to affordable furniture is going to be scale. This is actually a great section to shop in if you have a small apartment. In this case, you can get a futon that really mimics a more modern style couch. It can serve as a guest bed. It can have an upgraded wood frame. This is going to save you a ton of money over buying a traditional couch but it can be just as comfortable. However, you're going to need to go with a slightly more expensive futon because you don't want the piece to look like a dorm room.

Hitting the thrift store is a great way to get affordable furniture. However, sometimes upholstery can be a little bit difficult to find at these shops. If you are going to buy vintage pieces you want to make sure that they don't need new fabric because it’s so inexpensive. You may be able to just clean them up and mix it in with more modern pieces in the same color scheme. Another option would be to just slipcover it. However, you do need to be aware that when you work with slipcovers that it's just going to be a little bit too expensive to get custom pieces. This means that you need to go with a standard size and silhouette of furniture piece.
