Ideas for Following a Healthy Diet

If you are trying to lose weight, you may currently associate weight loss with feeling deprived. After all, many of the foods that you may be accustomed to eating may not be a part of your weight loss diet. The challenge is that when we fill deprived, most of us can only tolerate it for so long. In a weak moment, we are all tempted to turn back to our unhealthy eating habits.

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, what you need to do is focus on a long term solution. This means changing the way you feel about food, and finding foods that are healthy that you actually enjoy eating. You should look forward to healthy meals just like you would have an unhealthy meal!

When I first started eating healthy, the key for me was finding foods that I really loved that were also good for me. Luckily I did! Here are some foods that have helped me eat healthier!


Quinoa is a tiny seed that is one of the healthiest foods you will ever find! It is loaded with complete vegetarian protein and healthy carbohydrates. Quinoa tastes great and can be enjoyed in many different ways! I just love cooking quinoa. I try quinoa recipes all the time and am often amazed at all the different ways it can be prepared. It works just as well in a stir fry recipes as it does in a breakfast cereal. Always running short on time in the morning? Toast quinoa mixed with agave nectar and honey ahead of time and toss it on top of yogurt for a breakfast on the run.


Another great source of vegetarian protein is hummus. Garbanzo beans, often called chick peas, are rich in fiber and protein. Unfortunately, commercially made hummus can be higher in fat that you would like, and also may be loaded with unhealthy preservatives. A good solution is to find a low fat hummus recipe that you enjoy making at home. As long as you have a food processor, making hummus is very easy. Simply toss the ingredients in and blend! I like to experiment with different flavors. Some of my favorites are sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, roasted garlic, and cilantro.


Just because you are trying to shed a few pounds does not mean that your body does not need fat. You need fat, you just need the right kind! I love to make a clean guacamole and enjoy it over grilled chicken breast! It certainly doesn't feel like I am watching my diet!
