Great Valentine's Day Ideas

The best love poems for Valentine's day are really the best love poetry for any time of year. Love poems can be a tricky line at times between sweet and romantic to verging on corny and a little fake. When looking for the best love poem for your valentine, you will want to take your own relationship with them into account and use that as the start of your ideas for Valentine's day!
That said, here are the two contestants in my mind for Best Love Poems For Valentine's Day:

Love Is Not All

by Edna St. Vincent Millay:

Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,
Or nagged by want past resolution's power,
I might be driven to sell your love for peace,
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It well may be. I do not think I would.

I think that this is one of the greatest love poems for Valentine's day, balancing a passionate statement with the outwardly unromantic language.  If your other half doesn't like overly sentimental Hallmark poems for Valentines day, this is a wonderfully romantic poem that speaks of commitment and devotion (which is a alway a good idea for Valentines day!)

The next contestant for best love poem for Valentine's day is...

i carry your heart with me

By e.e. cummings

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in

my heart) i am never without it (anywhere

i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
                                 i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

e.e. cummings has a rather unique and unusual writing style (note that this love poem doesn't seem to conform to any rules of capitalization or punctuation!) but many find it to capture the overwhelming excitement (and sometimes confusion of falling in love. The language is more traditionally romantic and unquestionably evocative. I would put it on my list of best love poems for Valentine's Day purely on the basis of the stanza and last line. If you love someone, you do carry their heart in a way (you carry it in your heart)

Having a Coke with You

Frank O'Hara

“Having a Coke with you
is even more fun than going to San Sebastian, Irún, Hendaye, Biarritz, Bayonne
or being sick to my stomach on the Travesera de Gracia in Barcelona
partly because in your orange shirt you look like a better happier St. Sebastian
partly because of my love for you, partly because of your love for yoghurt
partly because of the fluorescent orange tulips around the birches
partly because of the secrecy our smiles take on before people and statuary
it is hard to believe when I’m with you that there can be anything as still
as solemn as unpleasantly definitive as statuary when right in front of it
in the warm New York 4 o’clock light we are drifting back and forth
between each other like a tree breathing through its spectacles
and the portrait show seems to have no faces in it at all, just paint
you suddenly wonder why in the world anyone ever did them
I look
at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world
except possibly for the Polish Rider occasionally and anyway it’s in the Frick
which thank heavens you haven’t gone to yet so we can go together the first time
and the fact that you move so beautifully more or less takes care of Futurism
just as at home I never think of the Nude Descending a Staircase or
at a rehearsal a single drawing of Leonardo or Michelangelo that used to wow me
and what good does all the research of the Impressionists do them
when they never got the right person to stand near the tree when the sun sank
or for that matter Marino Marini when he didn’t pick the rider as carefully
as the horse
it seems they were all cheated of some marvellous experience
which is not going to go wasted on me which is why I’m telling you about it”
The stream of conciousness and wonderfully intelectual piece of poetry might just do the trick for your excentric lover, who can think about high art but really just wants to spend time together, basking in each other's presence!
When it's time to be writing that Valentine's day card to your lover, you should also take a look at the great love poetry of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. I have too many favorites to list, but many of them could be a great love poem for Valentines day!

I hope to hear your feedback and suggestions of your contestants for best love poems for Valentine's day
