Important Points You Need to Know About Outdoor Holiday Lights
Nothing says the holidays are here like outside Christmas lights. For years and years they have brought the spirit of the holiday season to millions of people around the world. While the magic of a holiday lights Festival can clearly be seen in the eyes of a child, even most adults who have seen these lights go up year after year continue to experience a sense of joy and magic each and every year. Putting up holiday lights outside your home is part of a holiday tradition in the sense that it helps spread the joy and spirit of the holidays to everyone. Nonetheless, there are some basic guidelines that a person should follow in the process of hanging their holiday lights outside their home.
The first thing you should keep in mind is that not every string of Christmas lights is designed to be used outside. If you think about it, this makes perfect sense. The kind of lights that you might string up on your indoor Christmas tree don't need much in the way of energy input or insulation or protection against anything. Outside Christmas lights on the other hand, can be exposed to some extremely harsh weather conditions. Winter storms can be mighty strong and mighty nasty. You can get a driving wind, rain, snow, sleet or frozen rain. You name it, mother nature is ready to dish it out in the wintertime. You need something that was built with these types of weather conditions in mind.
If you are going out and buying new lights this holiday season, ask for some that are specifically made for outdoor conditions. If you are pulling out your lights from previous years, hopefully you still have the original packaging. Take a close look and see what is indicated on the box. If you no longer have the original box with this kind of information... remember what your mother always said; you are better off safe than sorry. Go ahead and get some new holiday lights specifically manufactured for the outdoors. You would hate to have some kind of accident that could either shut down all your lights or, worse yet, shock somebody or potentially cause a fire.
Speaking of potential accidents, another issue that often causes problems when people are hanging their lights outside is the way in which they fasten them to the house. The quickest and seemingly easiest solution is to use a staple gun. However, this is also probably the worst idea and the most dangerous. The reason being, staples can easily cut through the insulating covering of the electrical wires. Between this and the bad weather, you're setting yourself up for some serious potential problems.
Finally, if and when you're hanging your lights from a place where you need a 'boost', make sure you use a real, good quality ladder. While holiday lights add a lot to the holidays, nothing will ruin your holidays faster than an unnecessary slip and fall from a ladder and you spending the next several weeks in a brace or a cast or on crutches. Help add to the holiday feeling, not take away from them.
Following these few simply recommendations should help you avoid a lot of the potential problems that people encounter when hanging outdoor Christmas lights. So go forth, hang your lights smartly, securely and safely, and have a wonderful, magical holiday season.
