Improve Eye Health with Lifestyle Changes

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Our eyes are one body part that we should give more thought to. People fail to realize what the eyes do to connect us to the world around us. This is one sense that cannot be replaced like a leg or arm by a orthotic once we lose it. Try and incorporate more into your life to keep the life and health of your eyes in great shape. Improve eye health with simple lifestyle changes.

Make some adjustments in how you live to preserve your eyes forever. Many of the suggestions and ideas revealed here are simple and easy to do. Take the time to consider all the wonder and joy they give to us and do everything possible to make that last for a lifetime.

We get one set of eyes when we are born. They cannot be replaced and doing everything we can to keep them healthy is a step in the right direction.

Smoking

Smoking is good for nothing and very harmful to the eyes. With the New Year some folks have implemented resolutions that include getting rid of this nasty habit. Anyone that quits the habit of smoking not only gets a better heart and respiratory system, but also healthier eyes.

Age related macular degeneration or AMD is four times more likely in someone who smokes. This disease is unfortunately the leading cause of blindness in America. Not only is AMD more likely, but other diseases like cataracts and diabetes are also more apt to occur in smokers than non-smokers.

Diabetic patients that smoke will lose their eyesight by contracting diabetic retinopathy more often than a patient with the disease that does not smoke. Dry eye syndrome is twice as likely to happen in a smoker.

Eating

Eating healthier for your eyes is an easy adjustment to make to a lifestyle. There are some foods to add to a diet which are extremely great for better eye health.

Green leafy veggies like collard greens, spinach and kale are wonderful additives to our diets. These foods are very high in antioxidants like zeaxanthin and lutein which our eyes need to work better. Carotenoids are a type of pigment very concentrated in our eyes in the area responsible for high-resolution vision.

Carotenoids are wonderful for prevention of AMD. Free radicals are not good for our bodies and carotenoids help fight off the bad effects they produce to all parts of the body.

Prevention

Regular eye exams are important in eye health because they are able to catch any issues or diseases early. Being able to identify an issue at an early stage provides a better chance of successful treatment and recovery from a disease.

Regular eye exams are vital for anyone that wears glasses or contact lenses. Corrective lenses that are not fitted correctly cause unnecessary damage. Keeping a regular appointment with an ophthalmologist or optometrist is a preventive measure to a make certain corrective lenses are doing what they are created to do and not hurting our eyes.

In conclusion

Take the health of your eyes seriously. Simple lifestyle changes can improve eye health. Don’t smoke, eat eye healthy foods and keep preventive measures in place. Our eyes are the windows to the soul and important body parts that cannot be replaced once they are gone.
