Improving Your On-Page SEO to Increase Your Ranking

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Two of the most essential elements in search engine optimization are on-page and off-page SEO, both of which should be fully optimized in order to increase your website's ranking in the popular search engines. Within the area of on-page SEO, there are many important elements that need to be considered, such as internal links, body text, image alt tags, headers, page titles, page metadata and breadcrumb navigation.

This guide will teach you how to effectively optimize the on-page elements of your website in order to improve your overall SEO.

Step One: Choose a Proper Domain Name

Keywords are extremely important when it comes to search engine ranking, even within your website's domain name. For example, if your website is all about teaching people how to make money online and your domain name is www.how-to-make-money-online.com, when people search for the phrase "how to make money online", your website will come up as a direct match, giving it a top spot in the rankings. This is why it is very important to include the essential keywords for your niche in the domain name.

Step Two: Submit Your Site to Search Engines

They can't rank you if they can't find you, so the best way to increase your SEO ranking is to manually submit your website's URL to Google, Yahoo, Bing and any other relevant top search engine site. Google features a section called "webmaster tools" that will also allow you to submit your URL to other search engines such as their competitor site Yahoo. These methods will not give you immediate results, and because so many people submit their sites each day, they are not 100% guaranteed to be effective. However, submitting your URL to the engines is still an important step toward building your on-page SEO.

Step Three: Select a Relevant Page Title

Almost as important as your domain name, the title tag that you choose for your page is important because it will appear in your search engine listings. Making sure that your title tag is keyword rich and optimized to attract targeted visitors to your website is a huge part of search engine optimization technique. Making sure that the title of your page is relevant to what the visitors have entered into the search engine's search box will increase the probability that they will click on your link first. Make sure you don't abuse and over-use keywords over and over within your title and content, and ensure that your page title is short.

Step Four: Always Use Meta Description Tags

A lot of people overlook the power of the meta description tag, which is used to describe the content of your website and give the search engines a quick summation of what is available at your website. Your meta description tag should be keyword-rich, yet to the point, as another enticing lure to prospective visitors.

Step Five: Create a Relevant Page Body

Your page body is the main section of your website and requires the bulk of your attention and focus to ensure that it is relevant. SEO tactics to employ within your page body include hyperlinks, alt tags, heading tags, keyword-rich body text and helpful breadcrumb navigation. You want to be careful with your keyword density, keeping it between 2-5% maximum within your website's overall text content, ensuring that it is optimized to its full potential, yet not over-used or unduly repeated to the point where Google labels your site as "spam" and removes you from their listings.
