Indoor Tanning Lotions - An Introduction
Indoor tanning lotion (a.k.a. "sunblock" or "suntan lotion") is different from sunscreen in that it actually works to help the skin receive ultraviolet light rather than block it. The products work by increasing the production of melanin (i.e., a skin pigment derived from the amino acid tyrosine), by having melanin as an ingredient in the product itself, or by making blood flow to the skin more productively, which augments the amount of the melanin that is brought to the uppermost layers of the skin. Thus, indoor tanning lotions offer no protection from ultraviolet rays; rather, they increase the effects of ultraviolet rays, which, of course, many studies have shown to be detrimental to human health and physiology.
The greatest side effects complained about by individuals who use indoor tanning lotions is a "tingling" sensation. This reaction occurs because of the blood flow to the upper layers of the skin. Unfortunately, also, the skin becomes itchy and can form a rash with a fuzzy appearance. There are individual differences in each of the lotions, and whereas one person may experience a tingle trying one product, another may feel nothing at all with the product; the same two individuals can try two other products, though, and the reverse can happen. Thus, it is paramount for individuals who want to use these lotions to understand that there is a good chance that they will experience a "tingling" feeling when trying them.
One of the major ingredients inside of these lotions is "bronzers" (i.e., carbohydrates that commence the tanning process). Bronzers are usually blended together with other chemicals so that the user can experience the tanning results more quickly and effectively. Other ingredients inside these lotions include: green tea supplements, L-Tyrosine (i.e., an amino acid that produces proteins), Melanin, copper, and oils. Indoor tanning lotions , then, utilize many items, and users should educate themselves on the side effects of each of these ingredients before trying the products themselves.
Indoor tanning lotions can be used outside or inside. If an individual wants to moisturize the skin, it may be used indoors or outdoors. For example, most of the lotions contain hempseed oil, which makes the oils stay inside the skin while simultaneously promoting tanning effects on the skin. If a person uses the product outside, though, he or she should be warned that the sun can increase negative effects that a person may feel. Advisers point out that lotions are supposed to be used prior to and after tanning bed sessions only.
