Inexpensive but Unique Valentine Gift Ideas - Cheap Valentine's Day Ideas

By Edited May 29, 2016 0 0

Finding an inexpensive gift for valentine's day can be as easy as finding a rock on a beach....
Are you dirt poor but still want to give something special to your girlfriend / boyfriend / husband / wife / lover for Valentine's Day?  You're not alone!  As this recession continues on and we to tighten their belts, not-so-important holidays like Valentine's can get left behind.  But with a little ingenuity (and a lot of love) you too can have something special but inexpensive to give to your loved one that expresses your love for him or her.

Here are a few ideas to get those creative juices flowing:

Wish Jar

Jar or plastic box
Decorations for the jar or box
12 slips of paper

Decorate the jar or plastic box so it stands out.  You don't want something that will embarrass you or your loved one…but you also don't want to forget what the jar is and throw it out in your next cleaning spree.

When the big day comes, give the jar to your lover with instructions to write things they'd like you to do on the slips of paper.  These can include tasks that they don’t like, like cooking or cleaning for a week, or something extra like "give me a backrub" or "cook a romantic dinner".  Make a promise to pull a different slip from the jar each month and do whatever is on the slip.

Simple but Inexpensive Valentine's Day Gifts

Coupon Book

Heavy construction paper or card stock
Pens / pencils / markers

Use the construction paper or card stock to create a personalized coupon book.  You could do a book of the same coupons (like one free home-cooked dinner a month) or keep to a theme.  If you're really daring, you could go risqué and make a coupon book of fun stuff that could rev up your sex life too!

Picture Montage

Internet service
Digital pictures

Use an online photo service to create a collage or montage of your pictures.  You can do a theme, like "My Love Through the Years" or "2011 Love In Review", or just go willy-nilly and toss everything you have on there.

Most of these services will allow you to save your work to your hard drive.  You can then give this jpg or gif file to him or her as a reminder of your love, which they can then either print themselves or use as a desktop wallpaper on their computer.

You can do the same thing with a screensaver program or slideshow.  Be creative!  Add in text clipart to really jazz it up and toss in references to jokes that are special to you guys.  Most importantly, have fun!

Love Is In the Video

Create a video that expresses your love.  The more "outside the box" it is the more of a hit it will be.  Play your love's favorite music or include a visit to your guys' favorite place or where you met.  Make sure to talk about your feelings for him or her and how much you love them.  If you have a long-term relationship, you could reminisce about moments in the past that you both hold dear.

Love is a Puzzle

Poster board or heavy cardstock
Markers / Pens / Crayons / Paint
Heavy-duty scissors

Create a personalized jigsaw puzzle for your love.  Write a special message, or if you have the skill draw something, on the poster board or cardstock.  Then use heavy-duty scissors to cut the poster / card into puzzle pieces.  Place the pieces into a container or bag and add a corny label like "The Pieces of My Heart".

Try for something more unique than a box of candy for Valentine's Day

Childhood Memories

Box of kids' Valentine Cards

Remember back in elementary school when you'd give away those little cheap Valentine cards to your classmates?  Well, you can do it all over again now.  Buy a box of the little cards (they're still pretty inexpensive) and either give them to your love throughout the day or hide them in places or things where he or she will find them.

Romantic Day Off

Day off

Take a day off from work and life and spend it together.  It doesn't have to be actual Valentine's Day – it can be the next weekend.  Sleep in, make breakfast together, take a walk, watch your favorite movie – the sky is the limit!  Whatever you decide to do, make it a special day by forgetting about your usual chores and responsibilities and center your attention on one another.

Easy, Inexpensive Valentine's Day Gifts

Picnic of Love
Your love's favorite food and treats
Fire in fireplace (optional)

Maybe you don't have the money to take your loved one out to an expensive dinner but you can still give them a special edible treat – a romantic picnic.  Go shopping and buy all of your love's favorite foods and treats.  Make sure to hit all of the usual courses – appetizer, main, and dessert, with a special drink on the side.

Even if you can't cook, you can still have a nice little picnic by taking advantage of the ready-made section of your grocery store.  Hit the deli and buy a little bit of special cheese and or sausage to go on crackers for your appetizer.  Roll some yummy deli meats and cheese or grab a few pieces of fried chicken along with a couple of the side salads for your main.  Then follow up with your love's favorite dessert from the bakery.  Add in a good wine or specialty soda, and you've got a picnic made for a queen (or king)!

Treasure Hunt

Homemade cards for clues
Prize at the end
Lay out an old-fashion treasure hunt, like you used to have as a kid.  Make up clues that will take your love from one spot to another in your house or yard, ending with the discovery of the treasure.  Their reward can be a special treat like a CD of their favorite music, a picnic basket of food, or maybe even you!  Just make sure that the clues are well hidden – you don't want to make it too easy!
