The United Arab Emirates is located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. The country reaches part of the Gulf of Oman and the southern coast of the Persian Gulf. The country has a total of 32,278 square miles. Most of the land is barren and sandy.United Arab Emirates or UAE for short neighbors Saudi Arabia to the west and south, Qatar to the north, and Oman to the east. The country's capital city is Abu Dhabi and the country's largest city is Dubai which in recent years, has experienced astounding growth.
In ancient times UAE was inhabited by nomads who traveled from place to place in search of food and water. Later on though the natives were converted to Islam in the 7th century. Carmathians established a sheikdom, and its army conquered Mecca. Eventually the Sheikdom fell and in the early 16th century the Portuguese conquered the area.Eventually te British gained control of the area though. During this time, there were many pirates living there who were threatening the Sultanate of Muscat and Omen. The British were eventually forced to intervene. The British stayed in the Persian Gulf area of the Middle East until 1971. When the British left the area, the land they controlled was split up into Bahrain,Omen and United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, is the founder of the UAE and ruler of the federation. He died in 2004 and his son succeeded him. The framework of the UAE government is a federal, presidential system of a federation of absolute hereditary monarchies.
Today UAE is thriving due to oil reserves. In 2011, UAE is ranked as the 14th best nation in the world for doing business by the Doing Business 2011 Report . GDP per capita for UAE is currently third in the world. Most of the country's wealth comes from oil, but they also are in the manufacturing business too. Abu Dhabi is considered the richest city in the world! UAE has an unemployment rate of about 4% and a GDP growth of about 3%.
