Insomnia symptoms include habitual sleeplessness, chronic fatigue, and irritable mood. If you can’t fall asleep properly at night, you might be suffering from insomnia. The real problem with insomnia is that you do not function properly during the day. Insomnia bothers about 25% of all Americans, so if you find that you are suffering, you are not alone. Chances are, your problems lie in lifestyle decisions which could easily be fixed. In this article I describe the symptoms of insomnia and then I describe some natural remedies to help you fall asleep.
Here are the classic insomnia symptoms:
- You try to sleep, yet can’t sleep for hours.
- You wake up in the middle of the night.
- After waking up mid-sleep, you can’t fall back asleep.
- You wake up unrested and feel tired throughout the day.
- You find yourself unable to concentrate for long periods of time throughout the day.
- You are generally irritable and experience random bouts of anger during the day.
So you may read this and ask yourself: is insomnia really that bad? Because insomnia causes a drift in concentration, it can lead to huge problems when you are driving or working. That’s why if you do suffer from most of these symptoms, it is most definitely important to treat insomnia. I have written on this topic in this article previously before. Here are some simple tips to get rid of this problem.
- Drop the caffeine. If not completely, drop it at least 6 hours before you go to sleep. Caffeine can stay in your system for a surprisingly long time (as long as 8 hours).
- Do not exercise 3-4 hours before you sleep. Exercise stimulates your muscles and increases body temperature, which makes it a lot harder to fall asleep.
- Stop eating and drinking 3-4 hours before you go to bed. Eating increases body temperature and ramps up the digestive process. The two combined ruin sleep. Drinking before bed causes frequent urination and will make you wake up in the middle of the night.
- Make sure you aren’t stressed before you sleep. A good habit to practice is meditation before sleeping because it dissipates stress, which definitely helps you sleep soundly.
- On a whole, avoid sugar, but especially before sleep.
- Solidify your sleep schedule by maintaining a strict time where you go to bed daily.

With familial insomnia, you have a bigger, hereditary problem with your sleeping habits and that’s when some medical intervention may be needed.
