Installing Shower Inserts Over Tile

By | Apr 29, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

There is an interesting query, whether shower inserts can be installed over a tile shower, or if the tile should be torn out before installing the shower inserts. Generally, a tile shower not be torn out or covered by a shower inserts because tile is usually made of higher quality material. It adds more value to your home. It will last much longer than plastic shower inserts. It is overall more desirable than shower inserts. However, there are some occasions where replacing the tile with shower inserts makes sense. Here are the situations where you should switch and how to install shower inserts.

If the tile is dated looking but in excellent condition, you may be considering a shower insert option. Often, a bathroom can look updated without completely remodeling the shower, but if the look of your shower is hopeless, or you just hate it, shower inserts are the way to go. If the tile is not damaged, you can probably install the inserts right over them. Inserts need to be installed to a flat surface, so as long as the tiling is flat, you should be good.

If you have a few damaged tiles, you may be able to replace just those, keeping the cost down. With this option, you can skip the shower inserts all together. This will be a quick project and by far the most cost efficient. If you are not able to find matching tiles or tiles that you would not mind, you may consider putting up an insert over them. If you are considering selling your home soon, shower inserts will add more value than mismatched tiles anyway.

If your tile is so damaged that you are concerned that the wall behind them is damaged, you will need to rip out all of the tiles. Repair any damage that may have been done to the wall. You do not want mold growing in the walls behind your shower so now is the best time to deal with it. Once the wall is repaired, proceed with installing the shower inserts.

It is not advisable to replace a tile shower with shower inserts. You are essentially downgrading your shower. However, if you are set on doing just that, you can install the shower inserts right over undamaged tiles. Just make sure the wall is in good shape, because you will have a hard time tearing down those inserts if repairs are needed later on.
