Interesting Facts about Round Jet Bathtubs
The thought of having surging streams of water pummeling your back, neck, legs, and feet is no doubt an appealing thought after a long work day or a good run. If you've thought seriously about installing a round jet bathtub into your bathroom or outdoors, here are some good things to know before you make that decision.
Different Types of Tubs
There are several types of tub that can fall into the category of round spa tub, and you may be a bit confused by the options when browsing online or in store. But basically you have whirlpool tubs, Japanese or soaking whirlpool tubs, and spa tubs (which are often interchangeable with hot tubs).
Whirlpool tubs are often drop-in tubs that have contoured seating and are relatively deep with several adjustable jets surrounding the inside of the tub. They can usually only seat up to two people. Round Japanese tubs are deep, small bathtub designs, single occupant tubs that allow you to sit in up to neck deep water. This type of round jet bathtub may be freestanding or drop in depending on the model. Spa tubs may hold as many as six people and are often installed outside. They come in portable and in ground models, and may or may not include contoured seating (traditional wood hot tubs usually do not).
Different Material Types
Most of these circular bathtubs have four material options: fiberglass, acrylic, wood or cast iron. Many recommend acrylic as the strongest, most durable material, as well as a more affordable one. Cast iron, while certainly durable, is also more unusual and therefore more costly.
Installation
All circular air jet bathtubs will come with some installation considerations. Round Whirlpool bathtubs are drop-in tubs and can weigh in at over 1,000 lbs. Therefore, you will need to consider the floor framing and the size of doorways and hallways in your home. You'll also need to check on your well and/or septic tank to be sure they can handle the amount of water used and drained out of a whirlpool tub.
With a Japanese or soaking whirlpool tub, you'll need to decide if you want a drop in or freestanding model. Because of the depth vs. width proportions, you'll actually save space, which may be a consideration in your remodelling. Spa tubs come in portable and in ground models. Portable models can be moved indoors and out and only require a 110 volt wall socket to run. An in ground model, however, may require excavation, plumbing, and electrical work. Installing a round jet bathtub can be an ordeal, so take all of this into account when choosing your model.
While not the only three things to consider before buying a specialty tub, they may help you filter your shopping endeavors. So remember to look into the type of tub, the material it's made out of, and how it will be installed in your home or backyard. In the not too distant future, you may have those streams of water massaging you in your very own round jet bathtub.
