This way, one is accredited to work as a professional interior designer because one undergoes thorough training to develop the necessary technical and creative skills.  A high school education and good ACT or SAT scores are required in order to enroll in most reputable university interior designer programs.

Interior Design Programs
Attending and graduating from an interior design school awards the student with degrees such as Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design, Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design, and Bachelor of Science in Design. These types of schools also provide programs for the degree of Masters of Fine Arts in Interior Design. There are accredited private and state universities, representing the traditional learning system. However, students may opt for an accredited online institution to obtain their degree in interior design.  There are even programs which offer an interior design masters degree online.  There are many options for those interested in design ranging from becoming a home designers, specializing in industrial or retail design, developing a working relationship with architects and more.

Detailed research on several interior design schools is recommended so that the student can have the chance to discover the most suitable traditional or online interior design education program. Comparing and differentiating them, one determines which ensures the most comprehensive design education program.

Here we will analyze several educational systems related to the field of interior design from different continents to offer a panoramic view of the subject.

In Africa, interior design education is delivered by means of universities of technology and registered private colleges.  A study of graphic design is also incorporated into their course offerings.  The training programs are in partnership with other programs from several developed countries across the world.

Europe has a more heterogeneous educational system because their design programs differ from one university to another. Due to the differences, a discrimination line between interior architects and interior designers or decorators is drawn. Partnerships with other universities are established in order to provide a more comprehensive perspective on interior designer education. Students in interior designer classes have thus contact with various trends, which opens numerous internationally orientated options. The online interior design degree programs take between 3 and 6 years to complete. Some interior design institutions choose to shorten the primary university cycle, completing it with master degree programs.

In SUA, professional interior designer training is offered in universities and colleges in the form of four-year programs. The majority of students choose the bachelor's degree program. However, masters degrees in interior design online are also available for those interested in achieving a high level of performance and expertise.

Unlike the system in the United States, the Canadian one doesn't require a degree to represent oneself as a registered interior designer. To enroll in interior design programs and classes, the applicants submit their file and a portfolio to prove their creative ability. If accepted, they follow a 6-year program of combined educational and work experience. This period ends with an examination which determines who becomes a registered designer or home decorator.

Regardless of what system one belongs to, professionalism as a designer is based on an extended educational process.  Interior design education is an ongoing process that doesn't end after one has received their degree or certification.  Staying on top of the trends in interior design is key to being a success in the field.
