When you have family members or need to take care of disabled people at home, you may feel the jitters initially. You may not have the proper know how and skills to provide care that is even half as good as those of professional caregivers. However, if you know of the different assistive devices for the handicap that can assist with the disabled healthcare, you will feel better and more confident. Most of these assistive devices help you to lift or transport the disabled members conveniently without taking a toll on your physical body. This article aims to introduce some of these devices and their uses in the daily activities.
First will be the ceiling lift which is usually installed in the rooms of the disabled user. It is actually a track that is installed on the ceiling above the bed with a hoist attached to the track. The hoist has a canvas that is used to cradle the user and lift them from the bed. Upon lifting the user from the bed, the hoist will be moved along the track with the help of an assistant until the user is directly above the mobility device such as electric wheelchair. The user will be lowered slowly into position and the canvas released from the hoist. the ceiling lift removes the job of carrying the patients off the caregivers. Sometimes, the patients can be very heavy and caregivers may not be strong enough to carry them.
The other common lifting device for the handicap is the home stairlift. It is also another lift that runs on a track system fixed to the side of the staircase. It is has a chair for users to sit on and be moved up and down the steps. There are straight and curved stairlifts that can be customized according to the shape of your home staircase. If the user is on wheelchair and unable to alight to use the chair lift, there is also the platform stairlift which has a bigger dock to hold the wheelchair. It has a much stronger motor than the chair lift and can carry weights up to 300 pounds.
