Have you ever thought about what you are going to do when you retire? Many of us imagine being able to live the good life but statistics show that most people will retire broke. That's almost scary to even think about. Why is this? How can we be working for most of our adult life, be told to save what you earn, and still end up broke when we retire at age 65? The main reason is that most people lack the understanding of basic finance. We can blame it on the school system for not emphasizing on things like this but ultimately, it's going to come down to you. In order to have a great retirement, or at least be in a position where you aren't dead broke, you will need to make a plan.

Making money and saving it is great, but it won't really get you anywhere unless if you make a large amount of money. What you want to do with your money is invest it. Only investing your money will you have a chance of seeing your bank account grow. Most people will use things like a savings account which is okay for starters but at the interest rate that banks pay out these days, you're not even keeping up with inflation. A better investment is an IRA. You might already have something like this through your work. One thing that everyone should do is open a Roth IRA. This is similar to a traditional IRA but instead of investing pre-taxed dollars, you will be investing after-tax dollars. This means when you pull your money out, you won't be taxed since you were already taxed going in.

Since there is only a limited amount of money that you are allowed to put into your Roth IRA each year, you can't wait another moment to get started. Unlike most other investments where you can make up being late to the investing game by putting more of your money in, with a Roth IRA, if someone is putting in the maximum amount allowed and started 5 years before you did, there's really no way you can catch up to them. This is why opening an account as soon as possible is crucial.

Many people put off doing things like this simply because they don't know what to do. You can learn how to open a Roth IRA by doing some research online or simply asking someone who has already done it. Open a Roth IRA today because this is one of the best decisions you can make for your retirement.
