Iphone 5 - Too Little Too Late?

The Iphone 5 Is Out...Was It Worth The Hype?

Apple Iphone 5 features
In case you're Amish or have been living in a cave for the last few months, September 12 was the release date for the new Apple Iphone 5. Now that the phone and it's features have been announced, it's time to look at the newest Iphone next to it's closest competitors and see how it stacks up. Luckily for Apple, they could produce a paper weight with a glowing piece of fruit on it and fan boys would line up around the block for it all the same.

How Does The Iphone Stack Up Against It's Closest Competitor?

The newest Iphone comes with an impressive spec sheet, It's faster, thinner and has a better camera than it's predecessor. Apple has finally stopped telling it's customers how big they want their smart phone screen to be and started listening to what consumers actually want. The Iphone 5 sports a large 4" display that is still a far cry from the 4.8" offered by Samsung on the S3. Apple has long-maintained that 3.5" is the ideal screen size and that consumers would not want anything larger. I'm sure they would argue that everybody changed their mind the night before the Iphone 5 was released.

Iphone 5 sports an 8 megapixel camera with better low-light capability and built-in panoramic photo capability. Not bad at all for a cell phone. The camera is where the Iphone really shines. It simply takes phenomenal photos, even better than the low-end digital cameras of a few years ago. The Samsung S3 also sports an 8 megapixel rear camera that is no slouch but still can't match up to the Iphone. Curiously, Apple went with a mere 0.9 megapixel front-facing camera while Samsung opted for a 1.9 megapixel camera in front.

Unlike the 4s, the Iphone 5 features a design that is quite a bit different from the previous model. The new Iphone has a metal rear, a relief to anybody who has ever had the pleasure of shattering the rear surface of a 4s...one of Apple's more questionable design choices obviously placing aesthetics before durability. Iphone 5 will be far better in terms of durability with a metal case. The newest Iphone is 18% slimmer and 20% lighter than the 4s making it a little more comfortable in the hand.

Other new features of the Iphone 5 include LTE capability, a redesigned connector dubbed Lightning, and Apple's new A6 chip, supposedly twice as fast as the previous A5. Apple has also made some upgrades to its personal assistant, Siri. She can now give compassionate answers to difficult life questions such as "why don't my parents love me?"

You won't catch me in the three mile line for the Iphone 5. The phone will likely be a hit because it's made by Apple and has a massive following. Forgive me for feeling however that these latest upgrades are too little too late. The Iphone continues to be an underwhelming experience with minimal user customizability that just doesn't stack up against the Samsung S3 and other high end Android devices. If you want an amazing camera that can also make phone calls however, this is the device for you.
