Irish Coffee How to Make an Irish Coffee

By | Mar 8, 2011 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

There is actually a skill to making an Irish coffee, it’s not just about adding water and sugar to whiskey, and it must be made right and with care.

If you enjoy your coffee try this out when you have time. The coffee, whiskey and brown sugar complement each other immensely.

History

It’s hard to know where it was invented; people were of course adding whiskey to drinks for a long time before the term Irish coffee was invented. However it is quite fitting as it uses Irish whiskey which is famous the world over and uses a specific set of ingredients and method of preparation.

 Ingredients

  • Half a cup of good quality coffee
  • 1 measure of Irish whiskey
  • 2 Spoonfuls of brown sugar
  • Fresh pouring cream(whipped optional)

 How to make

  • Heat up the glass with boiling water; be sure to place a spoon in the glass first to draw the heat away so it won’t crack the glass. It’s important to heat up the glass before adding the mixtures
  • Make a serving of your favourite coffee (not instant)
  • Pour out the water and pour in the coffee to about an inch and a half from the rim.
  • Stir in the sugar until it has dissolved fully
  • Pour in a measure of whiskey into the glass(Irish whiskey is of course best here)
  • Now place the spoon gently on top of the mixture with the round part facing up.
  • Gently pour the cream onto the round part of the spoon so that the cream lies on top of the drink and doesn’t mix with it.

The result will be a glass of Irish coffee with a black/brown body and white head. You generally don’t serve it with a spoon to stop a person stirring it which is a no- no.

For those of you without a sweet tooth be warned that the cream will not float correctly on top of the drink without it mixed well and dissolved into it.

Enjoy
