Is Aliexpress safe? Isn't it a China-based web site? Many potential shoppers are faced with this question when they stumble upon a bargain on Aliexpress. Even though there are millions of products and thousands of sellers and suppliers on Aliexpress, people wonder about the safety of buying from a China-based site. This article explores whether Aliexpress is safe to buy from and some of the features that are available on this shopping portal.

Is Aliexpress safe - Features

Like the popular auction site eBay, feedback and ratings from past buyers let you know whether a seller is reliable or not. Even better, you can check the feedback for an item on its own page so you not only know whether the seller is trustworthy, you also find out whether the specific item you are buying is a quality product.

There will be an orange icon near the Contact Us section of an item page when the seller is online. Otherwise, you can also leave a message through Aliexpress’s messaging system.

I’ve used the chat function many times to ask questions and communicate with sellers and most of them reply almost immediately. They’re usually quite friendly too and there are no problems chatting with them in English.

Aliexpress also has a great Buyer Protection program. As long as payment is made through Aliexpress (and not directly to the seller), Aliexpress will hold the money until your item is delivered and you confirm that it is satisfactory. It is important to note that there is a timeframe for confirming the condition of your item so I normally check the item immediately when it arrives.

They also have a full money back guarantee if your item does not arrive within the stated delivery time. The delivery times are clearly written on the item page so if your item does not arrive within the timeframe stated, you can file a claim with Aliexpress.

My personal experience with Aliexpress

I have been buying stuff on Aliexpress for a couple of years now and I’ve never had to file a claim because products are generally good quality and arrive on time. I have bought items ranging from iPad covers to button-making machines and they have arrived in a timely manner and in good condition.

Once, I bought some exercise equipment that didn't work so well after a few months but that was mostly my fault for buying from a seller with no rating. That was the only time I had a not-so-great experience with Aliexpress though and the product was quite cheap so it was not a big deal. As long as you pick a seller with a good number of positive ratings, I think it would be unlikely that you’ll encounter problems with your purchases.

Staying safe on Aliexpress

To recap, these features and tips make Aliexpress safe for anyone to buy from.

  • Use their feedback system to determine whether a product is worth buying
  • Using their live chat function, talk to the sellers to clarify any doubts
  • Learn about the buyer protection program and know what you can do in case things don't work out
  • If your items do not arrive on time, you may be able to get a full refund
  • Don't buy from sellers with few or no ratings
