Is Do-It-Yourself really for you?
With all the trouble in the economy and people trying to reduce expenses, can you really do things yourself and save money? Many people can do projects themselves from home repair projects to designing a website; many think that when they see others do what seems easy, they can do it as well....but the outcome isn't what they wanted. Which one are you?
From your local Home Depot or Lowes you can find simple ways to do things yourself so you don't need a plumber or painter. With the internet and online courses you can learn how to do many other things yourself. At what point however is a project too much to tackle yourself?
Ask yourself these few questions to start:
Have you taken a workshop through Home Depot or Lowes and watched how easy it looked for the presenter, and wonder "how long did it take for them to become that good at it?"
Have you visited a website and taken a tutorial on a subject to have questions that were not answered during the tutorial and now don't know where to go for the answer?
Have you participated in a webinar only to find you have more questions, but the next webinar isn't for a few weeks?
If you are a business owner, considering tackling the design of a website your company or setting up even a small computer network, are you willing to trust the future of your business to a novice like yourself, if a poor outcome to the project can have a negative impact on your business?
Now ask yourself these questions:
If I do it myself and it doesn't turn out the way I like, will I be looking to find a professional to do it over?
If I do it myself and get injured and can't go to work, what will happen then?
If I do it myself and a problem comes up that I wasn't prepared for, will I be willing to pay someone more to complete the job?
When the job is completed am I worried that the end result will embarrass me and I may not want to admit who did it?
Am I trying to do this myself because I don't trust any of the people I have spoken to who do this professionally?
Saving money is very important; getting the project done properly, so that you don't have to call someone else in to redo it is also very important.
Remember when others demonstrate how easy a project is, it sometimes isn't as easy as it seems, when you do it yourself.

I would personally suggest that those willing to do the diy route start small first. Mistakes can be costly, but many small to mid size projects can be tackled by the average homeowner, assuming some level of skill.
Good article.
