Is There a Difference Between Sea Salt and Table Salt

By Edited Nov 13, 2016 1 2

Salt Processing

Even though both sea salt and table salt contain a high amount of sodium and chloride, they also contain other ingredients that makes the two salts different from each other. As a result of the difference, sea salt is rapidly becoming more and more popular; not only because it tastes better, but also because it is healthier for you.

Table salt is heavily processed at extremely high temperatures, and thus it contains many unnatural ingredients. But sea salt is obtained naturally by channelling sea water into large ponds, where it is allowed to evaporate naturally from the sun and wind. It is not heat treated, nor is it processed. It is purified, however, in order to remove any unwanted debris before it hits the grocery shelves.

Different Colors and Mineral Content

Another difference between sea salt and table salt is the fact that they come in different colors. Table salt is white due to the fact that it has been highly processed and contains no essential trace minerals.

Sea salt, on the other hand, can contain all the minerals that the human body needs in order function properly. Due to these minerals, it generally comes in colors of gray, pink or sandy colors. The richer the color, the more minerals it contains. Some of the minerals that are found include iodine, iron, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, copper and zinc.

Minerals have many health benefits, and when present in the salt they help to neutralize the acids in the body. Thus sea salt can help to restore a healthy balance between acid and alkaline, but regular table salt will cause the acid levels to rise above normal.

Price and Availability

Sea salt is generally on the more expensive side, nevertheless, it is much healthier for you, which makes the extra money well worth it. In most cases it is only available in health food stores and online, but there are some chain grocery stores that are beginning to carry sea salt as well.

Table salt on the other hand is readily available in all grocery stores as well as in many convenient stores and online.

Difference in Taste

Perhaps you are wondering what sea salt tastes like. I know I was skeptical at first, and was afraid that it would not taste the same or that I wouldn't like it. However, after I tried it, I discovered that it was actually much better tasting than regular table salt. Most people who try sea salt never go back to the old table salt again.
