Is Using Teeth Whitening Gel A Good Idea?

By | 1 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Teeth whitening gels have been shown to be an affordable and highly effective product for whitening teeth. However, there are several considerations that should be taken into account to decide if teeth whitening gels are the right thing for you in particular.

These gels use trays that fit over the teeth to hold them in place. But if you don't go to a dentist, these trays usually will not be a precision fit for your teeth. As a result of this, there is the possibility of the peroxide whitening agents used to slightly burn the gums. While this is not commonplace, cases of this have been reported, so the user should take precautions.

There is also the sensitivity of the teeth. Especially right after the whitening procedure is done; cases of discomfort in the teeth have been reported. You should use these gels within their recommended parameters and not use them excessively.

Also, results are not always permanent. Research has shown that a month or two after the whitening procedure, the teeth may lose some of the whiteness. This is not to say that they revert to their previous state, because they will still be whiter than before. But the whitest appearance immediately after the whitening procedure may not last.

There is also the issue of tooth enamel. Enamel is important for maintaining the teeth, and having it reduced can have negative effects. Teeth whitening gels have been proven to not do any significant damage to enamel, however they can do slight damage as a side effect.

One consideration that should be taken into account is age. If you are not 18 years of age or older, you are probably not ready for these whitening procedures. Children especially should stay away from these procedures, as their teeth and dental nerves are not fully developed, and as such they should not be tampered with until they are fully prepared.

Also, pregnant or nursing women should stay away from these procedures as a health precaution.

Overall, while teeth whitening gels are effective in their role, it is important that you as a consumer do some research before utilizing these methods. It is highly beneficial to be fully informed about the pros, cons, benefits, and risks of a product before using it.
