Is a High-End Smartphone Really the Best Option for You?

By Edited Feb 19, 2014 0 0

There are literally hundreds of high-end smartphones available on the market. The iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S3, and the Nokia Lumia 920 are just a few of the powerful devices to have appeared recently. Every year, new and increasingly-powerful smartphones are released, and technology fans are seen queuing up overnight and down the street to get their hands on the latest high-tech gadget.

However, do you really need a high-end smartphone? Or is a budget smartphone a better option? Here are a few reasons why you may be better off avoiding the latest model when you choose your next smartphone.

Too Much Risk

When you purchase a high-end smartphone, you are carrying around a very expensive device in your pocket. New smartphones are pretty tough so you don’t have to worry about dropping them too much, but even the strongest smartphones have their limits. On top of the risk of breakage, what if you take your smartphone out in the wrong place and it gets stolen? These are very expensive items to lose, so you have to ask yourself whether it is really worth the risk.

Unnecessary Features

Most of the new smartphones have features that are not particularly necessary for the average user. Smartphone manufacturers have to keep on making improvements and introducing eye-catching features, but you must consider whether these really justify the high price-tag.

The iPhone 5 has beautiful bodywork and a stunning design, and it also comes with a huge selection of apps. But how many of these apps do you actually need or want? The Lumia 920 comes with wireless charging, but is this really worth paying extra for? The Samsung Galaxy S3 has near-field communication (NFC) functionality to allow payments to be made using your smartphone, but this is still not widely used and so you may not actually need it.

Even budget smartphones running on Android and Windows Phone operating systems are smooth, responsive, and quick. They allow you to access the Internet, send and receive emails, play games, access the top apps on the market, and much more besides. They may not have the very latest features, but they may still have everything that you need.

The Latest Smartphones Soon Become Dated

If you want to keep up with the trends and always have the latest gadgets, it will be an expensive hobby. Things change very quickly in the smartphone industry, and all of the owners of the latest smartphones soon end up looking at their devices with disdain because the newer models look so much better. Even if you make sure you have the latest device, soon it will become dated like all of the others.

Stick with a Budget Smartphone

If a high-end smartphone is what you want, you should buy it and enjoy it. However, for the average user budget smartphones offer everything that is required, and each year they become more powerful than ever. If you are considering buying your first smartphone, there is a lot of sense in starting with a cheaper model as you'll find much better payment plans and smartphone deals if you choose a budget option. So go with your heart, and don’t get caught up in the hype of the latest smartphone release only to realize that you have spent a small fortune on something that you did not really need.
