No, for most people it is not essential that you have a writing desk, however they are useful and usually a very nice piece of furniture that is usually small enough to fit into even the smallest of spaces. You can buy standard writing desks or, if space is really an issue for you, there are even corner writing desks which are extremely space saving.

Many people like to have a surface to write on in their bedroom. A dresser or bedside table may suffice for jotting down small notes on paper but if you have a fair bit of writing to do it is usually much more comfortable to sit at a desk. Writing desks are also usually perfectly sized for setting a laptop on. They are handy when it comes to doing things like writing checks, balancing your finances or doing any other task that requires the use of paper and pen. Drawers in the front of the desk are also very useful for storing pens, keys and any other small miscellaneous objects that are often easily misplaced.

A writing desk can fit neatly into a living area or even a hallway. If you find you have a large sized space and nothing to put there a writing desk may be the solution. Of course it does not only have to be used for writing as you can even set nice decorations on it to add to your room's décor.

Another location that is quite suited to a small writing desk is a child's bedroom. They are small, thus usually fit into a child's room well and they give the child a place to sit and work on homework, assemble a puzzle or work on other projects. If you have a particular color coordinated bedroom you can always strip down and paint the desk a different color or you could buy an unfinished writing desk and stain or paint it as you please.

If you have a home office, you may also find that it is useful to place a writing desk in there, as opposed to a larger desk. Of course, it will work well for a laptop but if you have a desk top computer you may have to go with the larger sized desk or buy a small computer desk instead. Some modern writing desks even have a tray for a keyboard which is helpful to use even when working on a laptop.
