Logo(108785)The British spy thriller and adventure films of James Bond have captured film-goers imagination across the globe since Sean Connery's depiction in the first Bond film Dr. No was made back in 1962. No film series in the world has run for longer than the 49 years (and counting) accredited to the James Bond series thus far. With total box office revenue of just over $5 billion for the 22 different movies within the franchise, only the eight-film Harry Potter series has grossed more revenue than the James Bond series. The associated expense of those 22 movies was just over $1 billion.  The movie series all began, just like Harry Potter movie series, with a number of novels by Ian Fleming.

After the success of the first film, Eon Productions submitted a follow up film called From Russia with Love. It was released a year after Dr. No and the budget for the movie was more than twice the amount spent on Dr. No. It was also a huge success that allowed the production team to continue with a third film a year later called Goldfinger.

Over the last half century, 6 different actors have played the lead role.  The most popular James Bond is said to be Scotsman Sean Connery followed by Roger Moore, a quintessential Englishman who would charm the ladies and have a licence to kill. More recent James Bond characters have been Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and most recent of all Daniel Craig.  As an aside, Daniel Craig also had a cameo role recently in the London Olympics ceremony of 2012. He entered Buckingham Palace and together with Her Majesty the Queen, boarded a helicopter to parachute into the Olympic Arena during the games' opening ceremony.  There have been other James Bond characters who are lesser-known than the aforementioned actors. George Lazenby played Bond in a single release in 1969.

There have been many hit music singles that have spawned from the Bond movies. Shirley Bassey, a Welsh operatic style singer belted out Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger. The English band Duran Duran performed A View to a Kill and Carly Simon's Nobody Does It Better was both number one hits.  U2's Bono and The Edge also wrote the lyrics to 1995's Golden Eye.
