Jillian Michaels is not a celebrity who is selling workout DVDs to get you in shape simply to make money. Once upon a time, Jillian Michaels was overweight. She packed on the pounds bonding with her father over food after her parents’ divorce.
She lost weight, but was not in great shape because she ate poorly. Jillian lived on diet soda and other artificial diet foods. When she chose a healthier way of eating, in conjunction with exercise, she got into the shape she is in today. She outlined her transformation in her book “Master Your Metabolism“.
Eventually she became a certified personal trainer and came to the forefront of the exercise world with her no holds barred training style on “The Biggest Loser“.

If you are not a Biggest Loser contestant, you can still get a bona fide Jillian Michaels workout right at home. Jillian has put out many exercise DVDs to put you through your paces in the comfort of your own home.
One thing to keep in mind before you begin any exercise routine is to consult your doctor. Jillian Michaels workout DVDs are tough, and will be very difficult for beginners. Unlike Leslie Sansone or Richard Simmons, who are gentler fitness experts, Jillian Michaels has created workouts that take no prisoners. While she does have a series of DVDs that are targeted to beginners, the following reviews are for her more advanced exercise DVDs.

The following reviews are based on my own personal experiences working out to Jillian Michaels DVDs. I have been an avid at-home exerciser for the past twenty-four years. For the record, I am a forty-something mother of three who is petite in stature. Do I look like Jillian Michaels or the women with whom she exercises? No. Am I in physically shape for a woman my age? Yes, I am.
I also have a few injuries that I have to deal with during Jillian’s routines. I have a bad left shoulder, despite corrective surgery, so I have to make adaptations that do not harm myself further. My left knee is also weak, so I have to limit how high and how often I jump in the air, and do a low impact version that protects me from further injury.
Jillian Michaels No More Trouble Zones Workout DVD
In Jillian Michaels’ No More Trouble Zones DVD, she promises to “eliminate love handles, muffin tops, and wobbly arms for good!”
No More Trouble Zones is a fifty minute workout that is broken down into circuits. Exercise time is forty minutes total, broken down into five minute circuits. Each circuit repeats each thirty second exercise twice. In addition, there is a five minute warm up and a five minute cool down. A bonus to having a DVD is if you are short on time one day, you can skip a circuit or two and still get a dripping sweat workout.
You will need a set of three pound weights. If you are a raw beginner, I suggest starting with one pound and working your way up to three pounds. She also uses a mat for floor exercises, but if you are working out on a carpet, you should be fine.
Each circuit combines weights and cardio to get you to burn the most calories. Doing these two together gives you a maximum burn in a short amount of time. There is not a lot of high impact in this DVD, but there are a lot of “super sets”. A super set is when you focus all of your exercise on one muscle group. Just when you think you cannot take any more, the circuit is over and you are on to the next one.
I love this workout because it delivers. I also like it because there is not a lot of jumping, which is not good for my knee. Her two abdominal workout circuits are killer, and will get rid of your muffin top. I find that if I overslept (I work out in the morning), I can still do most of the circuits and feel like I got my exercise quota in for the day. If you work out to it several times a week, you will see results. You should take a day off in between because, take it from me, your muscles need it!
Jillian Michaels Banish Fat Boost Metabolism
Jillian Michaels Banish Fat Boost Metabolism DVD is a great companion to her No More Trouble Zones DVD. This is pure old school cardio, no weights involved. Again, she breaks her fifty minute workout into six minute repetitive circuits, along with a five minute warm up and a shorter cool down. She does use a mat for floor work.
Because this is an intense cardio workout with a lot of kick boxing added in, it is high impact. Personally, I do have to make adaptations for this because of my knee. Still, I am getting a killer workout and feel so good when I finally finish it! You are working every single part of your body, and it will feel it when you compete this workout.
Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred
Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred was produced for those who believe they have no time to work out. To combat this old wives tale, Jillian Michaels came up with an insane workout that in twenty-five minutes, will help you change your shape.
Jillian uses a 3-2-1 interval system for each circuit that works-three minutes of strength, two minutes of cardio and one minute of abs. There are three different workouts on this DVD that require three pound weights and an exercise mat.
One minor complaint is that it is suggested that you do Level One before moving to Level Two, that can be boring. You can do the other levels and adapt the exercises as you go along until you can do them with ease. Of course, I mix it up with all of the other Jillian Michaels DVDs that I own so I do not get bored.
While I do enjoy this workout, for me it is not enough. I like to exercise for an hour, so I usually do another DVD along with this one.
Jillian Michaels 6 Week Six-Pack
I just bought Jillian Michaels 6 Week Six Pack with the Amazon gift card I won in the Info Barrel contest. Boy, am I glad I added this Jillian Michaels workout to my mix!
Every bit of the DVD, which contains two levels of workouts, focuses on your core. The workouts are thirty minutes long and contain cardio and ab-toning circuits to get your gut flat. There is also a five minute warm up and cool down.
You will need one weight (three pounds or higher) and a floor mat.
Presently, I am on Level One and it is an intense workout. She does the circuit for about fifteen minutes, and then repeats every exercise again. There is quite a bit of floor work, and many of her advanced exercises I cannot do, as I cannot balance myself on one arm due to my shoulder. However, I do not sit and watch. I simply substitute an abdominal exercise that I can do while she goes through the one I cannot. Works like a charm!
You also get a great cardio workout, so there is no need to do another workout once Jillian Michaels 6 Week Six Pack is finished.
