Jobs for Women versus Jobs for Men

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

There are jobs that have innate gender bias. I was talking to a guy a while back and we got to the subject of jobs. I asked him what he did for a living. He said, "I am a midwife". I smiled and said, very funny, what is your real job. He smiled and said midwife. The smile on his face showed that he was already used to people being surprised by his occupation. Why is it that some jobs just don't fit with our preconceived idea? It is also the same when you see someone who is smartly dressed and you immediately imagine he works in an office. He might be a road sweeper (nothing against that job) and the person who appears scruffy might be a medical doctor. These are some of the ironies of life and the way we have been mentally configured to think. Here is a list of jobs that are mostly gender focused.

Babysitting: This has always been in the domain of women. If a man where to say he is a babysitter, it would sound really strange. Furthermore, how many families are willing to leave their children to the care of a man? Men are generally perceived to be useless when it comes to children. You might leave your child to a male babysitter and he might forget to feed him or things along those lines. A male babysitter is just so unusual. What is even amazing is when the father of the children says, I am babysitting today. It sounds as if his wife is punishing him.

Stay at home father: Women are supposed to stay at home and men are supposed to go out and work. If you are a stay at home father and do all the chores that women normally do, it will still be strange. Most people will think you are lazy and you let the poor woman (your wife) go out and earn the money. There is no way you can explain your way out of this. You could lie and say I am a writer and I take care of the children. That will take the sting away because it shows that you are not lazy, you are making the most of your time and talent.

Nurse: This job is normally for women but it is no longer unusual to have male nurse. It even sounds sexier to be a male nurse. As long as he doesn't show up for work in a miniskirt there should be no problem. Nursing implies care and making the patients feel good and comfortable. Men have come a long way from the days of "men don't cry". Some macho men still think men who show their feelings are girly men. That might be the case but nursing is now open to all and men are also welcome.

Midwives: Mid-husband just sounds wrong. This is a female thing. There are few men in this field. When you come to think of it, it is normal. What does a midwife do?

Midwifery is a health care profession in which providers offer care to childbearing women during their pregnancy, labour and birth, and during the postpartum period. They also care for the newborn through to six weeks of age, including assisting the mother with breastfeeding" - wikipedia

Truck Drivers: If you conjure up the image of a truck driver, he must first and foremost be male. He must be slightly chubby with a pot belly. What will be your reaction if you were to see a pretty blond behind the wheel of a heavy duty vehicle? Surprise! Surprise! It could also have been a beautiful brunette. Maybe it was a brunette with colored hair. There are a lot of women doing this job that was once considered male job.

WAGS: this is a British term meaning Wife and Girlfriends. If you are into football, you will know how popular some women have become due to their link with famous footballers.

"WAGs (or Wags) is an acronym used particularly by the British tabloid press to describe the wives and girlfriends of high-profile football players, originally the England national football team." - wikipedia

At the moment there are no high profile female football teams in the world. The word HABs (Husbands and Boyfriends) might one day come into existence but till then we'll just have to wait.

Secretary: If you think about the word secretary, your mind sees a woman. That is no longer the case, because men are also in this profession. You will not see that many men but they are out there. This is not like the secretary of state. That is in a different league. Secretary of state is a ministerial position in politics and has nothing to do with the generic term secretary. PA or Personal Assistant is another fancy way of saying a secretary.

Pilot: Most pilots are male and that has been the case for such a long time. Imagine you are sitting in the plane before takeoff and you hear the following announcement with a female voice " hello this is your captain speaking blah, blah…" You might think, I hope that is a joke. Well it is not a joke as women are also into flying. Traditionally women are air hostess which is a fancy name given to servers who serve food in a planes. Why would you be surprise or even fearful of a woman at the helm of a plane. She might actually start painting her nails or brushing her hair instead of flying the plane? That is a misconception that most male have. Women are just as good as men when it comes to flying a plane. The fact that it was traditionally a male role doesn't mean women are bad at it. Women just didn't get the chance at the time. Times have changed and are still changing. Who knows what might happen next. I guess most travelers don't mind if the pilot is a woman or a man. They just want to fly from point A to B and do so in relative safety.
