Juice Fasting: Is It Effective?
Juice Fasting for Weight Loss is a Common Diet Plan
Juice fasting is a form of detox diet that involves consuming only raw vegetable and fruit juice for a specified period of time. Juice fasts can last as little as one day or as long as several weeks or months. It really depends on your reasons for starting a juice fasting plan and what you are trying to get out of it.
Reasons for Juice Fasting
There are many reasons for juice fasting, although not all of them have been medically proven to be effective.
-Juice Fasting for Weight Loss - People may choose to try juice fasting for weight loss. If you're trying to lose weight quickly, you may choose to do a 1-3 day juice fast. It's thought that you can lose weight at a faster rate by not consuming whole foods and only drinking raw fruit and vegetable juice.
-Detoxify Your Body - Cleaning out your internal organs and digestive system from toxins is a popular reason to start a juice fasting plan. It's also thought that nutrients and vitamins from the juice help improve your immune system.
-Improve Your Overall Health - By only consuming raw fruits and vegetables while juice fasting, your overall health should improve.
Typical Fruits and Vegetables Used for Juice Fasting
It depends what type of juice fast you're doing, some are more restrictive than others. Typical juice fasting recipes can consist of:
The juice will not be the same as the kind you can buy in grocery stores. Those are usually loaded with added sugar; a juice fast requires all raw and natural juices.
What You'll Need for Your Juice Fasting Plan
Juice fasting is relatively easy to prepare for because all your need is fresh fruit, vegetables and a juicer. Also, remember to remove any seeds from the fruits that you use.
Juice fasting for a couple of days can provide some good health benefits. If you're looking to lose a couple of pounds quickly, for whatever reason, then a juice fast may be the thing for you. We're always told to eat our fruits and vegetables and that's literally all you'll be consuming, along with water. However, I'm not so sure that doing a juice cleanse for multiple weeks or months is a good idea. You'll be consuming almost no protein over this time period, so yes you may be losing weight, but a good portion of that will be muscle that you already had. Also, a lot of it will be water weight. It just seems a bit too extreme to me.
I would recommend taking a more moderate approach. Substitute a meal per day with a juice drink, or replace your dessert with one. Juice fasting isn't a long-term answer, especially for weight loss. As soon as you start eating solid foods again, you're likely to put at least some of the weight back on. I think it can be beneficial in detoxing your digestive system, but I think modifying your current diet is a more effective long-term solution than a juice fasting diet plan.
