Keep Window Treatments Simple
While we need window coverings to provide privacy in living rooms and bedrooms, to add warmth in the cooler months and to keep out the early morning sunlight from bedrooms in summer, we don't need anything too elaborate or expensive. There is a tendency with window treatments to go over the top but if you are on a tight budget (and even if you are not) simple can be best, especially if you make the right choices in terms of style and fabrics.
If you don't have a lot to spend on your windows some of the most effective window coverings are simple roller blinds in plain colors such as cream, white or gray. If you are then able to spend a little more you can keep the blinds and add dress curtains at the sides of the window to add a little softness to the arrangement or top with with a stylish window valance. Even with valance window treatments the trend is to have a very simple design and even in best interiors magazines you will often see nothing more than a scarf valance draped over a pole and arranged artfully at the side of the window.
If you prefer curtains to blinds or shades, then choose a simple plain color for these and add interest with headings such as tie or tab top. You will find plain cream curtains look good with many room color schemes, do not fade in the sun (as many patterned fabrics do) and look more expensive than they are.
If a plain curtain is too plain for your taste you can always add a colored or beaded edge for interest and tie in other colors in the room that way.
For kitchens, simple is an absolute necessity as kitchen curtains invariably need frequent laundering. You could choose cafe curtains there as they cover the bottom half of the window only, providing privacy while letting in ample light through the remainder of the window.
All curtains (apart from voile and other sheers) hang best if they are lined. There's no doubt about that. But simple unlined curtains can be effective too if money is tight. You can make them yourself and they will provide the privacy you need in the evening and filter out sunlight in the early mornings.
It then all comes down to your choice of fabric and there are so many curtains fabrics around, you should be able to find one to suit your room scheme and budget. You can either shop once you know what kind of look you want to create so that you evaluate curtains, blinds or fabrics with that in mind. Or you can go shopping for inspiration and allow your chosen curtain fabric to set the color and mood of your room.
