Keep Your Cool With A Laptop Cooling Pad

By Edited Jan 23, 2016 0 1

Comfort For You And Protection For Your Laptop

Xpad (Non-slip Laptop Cooler and Heatshield)

When you choose to add a laptop cooling pad to your computer it not only helps to protect the machine but it will also keep you cool and comfortable when using the computer on your lap. Laptops used for short periods do not usually cause much discomfort to the user or potential damage to the computer.

However when they are used for long periods of time or if they are being asked to use lots of their resources when running multiple software programs or video games some computers can become very uncomfortable and in extreme conditions damage delicate computer systems or batteries & power systems.

While there is always debate over the need for additional computer accessories it would seem that the extremely low cost of a laptop cooling pad or stand would make it a worthwhile investment if only for the comfort it provides the user. Working for long hours with a hot laptop machine sitting on your legs will not make your work or gaming very pleasant.

 Passive And Active Models Available

Laptop cooling pads or as they are sometimes called laptop cooler or cooling stand, use either passive or active methods to remove or dissipate heat. In the passive or inactive pad special crystalline compounds are used. These crystals actually melt and form a gel like substance which absorbs heat from the computer. Once the computer is turned off or other wise is not producing heat the gel reverts back to it crystalline form.

The greatest benefit of this type of laptop cooling pad is that it does not require any electrical current which would normally be supplied by a connection to one of the computers USB ports to drive fans.

The active pads as mentioned use electrically driven fans to disspate the heat. The fans differ in size and some units use two or more fans. The current is drawn from the laptop through a connection to a USB port. Some models offer a pass through port which allows a USB connection in the cooling pad. This can be an important freature because without it you do lose one of your computers USB ports when using the pad.

We noticed right away when reviewing the available models of the laptop cooling pad that they all seemed to have very high marks with customers. This is unusual with an electronic device but especially with computers which no matter how good they are always seem to find owners who have complaints or are unhappy because some feature was not available or compatible with most models.

A Sampling Of  The Models Available To Help You Choose The Best Laptop Cooler

We have chosen a few of the models listed on Amazon to give a sampling of the models available and a quick look at cooler reviews. The first sample is a passive cooling pad.

In several recent reviews this pad was rated better tan many active coolers. It is light weight and will fit in your computer bag along with your laptop. It has a non slip design to keep your machine from sliding around on your legs. There are some who claim that excessive heat from laptops can be harmful to users. Atany rate sitting with a hot computer on your lap as mentioned above is not a pleasant experience.

 The Technical Stuff:

Don't use my laptop without it. Period., August 28, 2007

By Mark Wieczorek (Brooklyn, NY United States)

I've had this for about as long as I've had my laptop (a new model is out and it's $200 cheaper so that makes it what... about a year?) and I love it. It fits my 14" just fine and could probably fit a 15" too. It's the exact same width as my laptop and about 1 inch longer, which is ideal because a little bit of slack forward & back keeps it on your lap even when it slides just a bit.

Next we have a couple of the more popular active models. All of these cooling pads are very simple and do not require much detail to describe them. However you will want to review the available models and pay attention to customer reviews to get a good idea of which models will suit your situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Cool!, May 26, 2011

By Johnny thunder

Currently, I own a 2008 Dell Latitude E6400, which always gets the "blue screen of death" from over-heating. Keep in mind, I often crossed my legs on my lap, allowing sufficient airflow to the cooling vent. I honestly thought notebook coolers were a niche product. Having had experience with the awful Targus PA248U1 Chill Mat, I had virtually given up on a notebook cooler being able to solve my alarming heat problem. However, I perused Amazon's site for a few hours and did my homework. I soon discovered the criteria that my prospective cooler needed to fit.

 Does a great job, April 27, 2010

By Studio 1 Productions (Florida)

This laptop cooler does a great job and the fan is VERY quiet.

This laptop fan blows air up onto the bottom of the laptop to keep it cool. While the fan doesn't blow a huge amount of air from the laptop cooler, it does blow out enough air to keep the laptop's temps lower than without it

Best cooler I've found for my MacBook Pro 15", October 1, 2009

By JAZ (Palo Alto, CA United States)

You name it, Zalman, Belkin, Antec, Notepal Infinite, I've almost tried them all, some even triple the price. The U2 is by far better. Its light weight, simple design, and super super quiet. What I like most is the movable / positionable fans allowing you pin point where the hot spots are which is unique to different brands/model of laptops. In most cases, I don't even turn on the fan. The vented holes allow good air circulation. My 15" MBP typically stays below 50C and it fits on top of it perfectly. The large rubber pads keep itself from sliding. For the price you can't find a better gig than this - at least I haven't. I give it a 5-stars.

Even The Best Electronic Products Seem To Receive A Few Negative Comments

Here are a few of the negative comments we found even when a particular model had hundreds of positive reviews.

Doesn't look easy to take apart to really clean inside the nook and crannies.

For some reason the description says it can fit up to 17-inch laptops. this is not true as when i received mine it said on the box only up to 15'4 inches.

As some previous people have commented, the bottom wiring and even screws are exposed. This leads to discomfort while using as on the lap as opposed to another surface.

This cooler is made of extremely thin material - can't tell if it's plastic or lightweight metal. It warps with barely any effort, and "squishes" under the laptop.

This is why customer reviews can be so important to you when making a purchase. Spend a little time on Amazon reviewing the information available and you will make a better informed purchase.

The Laptop Cooling Pad Is Among The Most Popular Accessories

Of all the laptop products we have reviewed the laptop cooling pad shines as one of the most well liked items available. It's low price and simplicity of operation makes this one item that should be on your review list. Protecting your valuable computer and offering personal comfort and with some models adding an extra storage compartment, make this a superb product.
