What is Long Tail Keyword Research?

Keyword research is one of the most important aspects of ranking in the search engines. Keyword  research is when a writer researches competition, trends, search volume, cost per click, and other bits of information about a keyword phrase or topic idea. Keywords are the main term and the focus of the article. For example, this article focuses on the main keywords are keyword research and choose keywords. All writing breaks down into a main keyword, two word keywords, and three word keywords. Long-tail keyword research is the process of researching a board topic to make it more focused. Equally important is the fact that many of these keywords topics are informational. On information topics your readers are there for information. They often read and go. They rarely read and click an ad. Even when you get traffic to your high CPC keyword articles the CTR is low because the reader is does not need more information. This is true if you have optimized your article for a high paying keyword or for cheap keywords.

Pick Keywords with Earning Potential:

Keyword choice makes or breaks your online writing. Since choosing keywords and topics with earning potential was the most difficult concept for me here is an example from my articles. In September 2010, I wrote some Halloween articles. On a hunch I wrote about Lady Gaga costumes, but did not use any keyword research. I was surprised when hundreds of views started came very quickly and steadily. By the end of October 2010 that article has over 5,500 views. It was published and live on Google just over a month. It earned money and was my top viewed October article. Even with the highest views its keyword earning potential was very low. It did not make nearly as much money as you'd expect with over 5,500 views in 1 month. Why?

Here are a few main reasons:

  1. Readers wanted information. They took it and left. Sometimes they clicked ads.
  2. It was a very low paying keyword with low earnings potential. The earnings potential was low because the likelihood of readers being interested in the ads was low. Although ads were related they were not necessarily useful so they were not enticing.
  3. Advertiser competition was low. Do keyword research and choose keywords, but part of earning money is advertisers. Advertisers pay for the ads and they have a budget. You are paid a percentage when a reader clicks on an ad. If there are only a handful of advertisers then the ad rotation gets stagnant. Without a good variety of ads the earning potential is low. I am very proud of that article even though the CTR was low. It was a success. Between it and one other article, I brought in 10,000 views in about 5 weeks. With that many views there were things I did right with the keyword choice and topic. Long tail keywords brought traffic. Had I done just a small amount of keyword research before writing that article I would have earned more money, increased traffic, and had increased conversions. A major keyword research concept to consider when you choose keywords and topics is earning potential. That article had higher earnings potential, but readers wanted to know how to make something when I wanted to sell them something. A key point is to learn what makes readers want to click an ad. Who is your audience? Ads are your money. Figure out how to please readers and effectively use keywords research and you will increase InfoBarrel earnings.

Keyword Research: Choose Keywords for Best Pay Per Click

The goal of keyword research is picking keywords that will result in the best pay per click for you. The best pay per click is not always the highest paying keyword. Making money online is about balancing multiple concepts for success. Write about specific topics rather than broad categories. Do this by narrowing down a topic into a more specific direction so you can gain more traffic. Remember long-tail keywords. Doing keyword research to pick keywords with the best pay per click does not mean highest paying. It means the best PPC you can get for where you are writing. Consider page rank, competition, SEO, earning potential, advertisers, and you will find your best pay per click keywords.

Keyword research and SEO concepts can be transferred to your own website. Often, folks are eager to get their own site thinking they will make more money there than at a site like InfoBarrel, Hubpages, or other revenue share sites.
