The right kitchen curtains are the ones that fit your needs and add the right touch to your kitchen. Your kitchen can be a hub of activity and most families spend a lot of time in the kitchen preparing meals together, studying or just enjoying each others company. Remember Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons? Time wasn't spent in front of a screen or locked in a bedroom. The kitchen was a family room throughout the day and evening. The right kitchen decor can make your kitchen a focal point of your home and family life.

Probably the most important thing with curtains is safety. Making sure they are flame retardant and the proper fit for the window should be priorities. Now think about how much time you spend in the kitchen. Are you a stay at home mom cooking for a family and spend a lot of time in the kitchen or a single person in an apartment catching a meal here and there between work and sleep?
Do you have a big window allowing plenty of natural light to come in the kitchen or does your one kitchen window face the brick wall of the building next door? Next determine how much you can invest in kitchen curtains. Simple panels or cafes with valances or tab tops are the three most popular styles and vary greatly in cost depending on fabric, style and theme. Care of your curtains should also be considered. Machine washable would be the most cost and care efficient.

Once you know the type of curtain fabric, you want determine the purpose of the curtain. Is it simply for privacy when you want that late night snack or to enhance a cozy rustic kitchen?
Panels can be sheer and cover the entire window allowing natural light and offering some privacy. Tiebacks can be used with panels to allow an outside view and can add to the decor of the panels.
Cafe kitchen curtains are for shorter windows and cover the bottom half of the window for privacy while allowing light through part of the top.

A valance is needed for the top half of the window to create a balanced appearance. Tab top curtains have fabric loops or ties that knot over the curtain rod and can be long or short with or without tiebacks. These are probably the most versatile style and the easiest to make yourself if you are the make at home decorator type.

Kitchen curtains serve multiple purposes and come in such a wide range of styles and colors that your choices can be endless. So take the time and think about what your needs are and your personal preferences are when selecting them. Are they simply functional or can they be fun or enhance your whole kitchen look.
