Kids Worm Farm: How To Set It Up
Having kids is one of the best things in the world. If you are a parent then you know that is not the case with kids and they pretty much like the grossest most disgusting things ever. They have some strange fascination with anything dirty and worms in particular. If you want to do something unique and fun with your kids you could start up a kids worm farm and they are sure to really enjoy it.
Do not worry because it takes no time at all and you will not have to get that dirty. There are only a few easy steps you will need to take and you will have your kids worm farm up and running. The best part is that you can get the kids to help you because there is really nothing dangerous about starting up a worm farm. Do not even think about putting any worms in a container before preparing them.
Each container should be quite large in size and needs to have holes drilled in the bottom as well as along the top. It is best to keep the holes drilled in evenly especially in the bottom to ensure proper drainage. Once you have done this you can start working on the bedding which is what the worms will actually be living in inside the containers. That includes newspaper, cardboard and dried leaves.
Garden soil will also need to be used, especially if you want to be able to take compost from your worm farms and use in your gardens and flowerbeds. It should take no time at all to prepare the containers and now the kids can help put the worms in. This is the favorite part for most kids, when they get to toss the slimy worms into their containers. You may even want to let the kids give them each names as they put them in just for an extra bit of fun, even though you are obviously going to get them mixed up and forget soon after.
To ensure the worms in your kids worm farm stay healthy, set up a schedule so you can keep track of feedings. Pretty much any garbage they will eat, as they suck on moist and rotting waste. Your kids are going to love feeding the worms and will feel like they are their little pets. You can actually start up a worm farm with your kids as a way of teaching them responsibility and building them up to getting a larger pet like a cat or dog.
