By Edited Apr 11, 2016 0 2

It can be much cheaper to refinish your old kitchen cabinets than purchase new ones, you can see that if you have shopped for new kitchen cabinets recently. They cost a lot of money. Here are 8 helpful tips for refinishing them and enjoying "new" beautiful kitchen cabinets for many years to come.

#1.Remove the paint with a chemical stripper if your kitchen cabinets are painted. If they are varnished or stained it is best to use a chemical re-finisher to remove most of the stains or varnish. You can also clean the surface well.

#2.Remove the hardware and handles and take the doors off your kitchen cabinets.Lay the doors flat on a table or on the floor, this makes it a lot easier to work on them.

#3.Are the cabinets damaged? If there are only dark stains around the door handles then all you need to do is clean these areas with a synthetic steel wool pad.The benefit of using a steel wool pad is that you will not hurt your fingers.

#4.Dip the steel wood pad in mineral spirits, turpentine or paint thinner to scrub the dark stains around the handles. In order to make the new finish stick properly, just lightly scrub the whole surface.

#5.Once you have removed the dark stains and cleaned the surface of the kitchen cabinet doors, it is time to wipe on a clear oil-based finish. There are many of these on the market, but for instance MinWax would work well here.Clear finishes are available in satin finish or glossy, and they are all low-odor as well.If you want a thicker finish just apply several coats.

#6.Use a chemical re-finisher if you need to redo a lot more than just a few stained areas of the doors.A chemical re-finisher is a strong solvent cleaner that removes and dissolves part of the old varnish. Always use a high quality re-finisher so you will not end up destroying the kitchen cabinet doors. For more information, go to the local paint store and ask an expert.

#7.Work in small areas when using the chemical finisher, use a synthetic steel wool pad to scrub the finish. The chemical finisher will remove the finish and it will get clogged with dirty finish, be sure to rinse the pad in more re-finisher once in a while.

#8.After you have scrubbed the entire surface, the kitchen cabinets´s surface should now be evenly colored and smooth. If it not smooth, you can wipe the cabinet with clean re-finisher and clean steel wool.Use long overlapping strokes for best results. The wood will be very smooth and most of the stain color will remain.

Work in a well-ventilated area and always use protective clothing when you are refinishing your kitchen cabinets. The refinishing products have safety precautions, be sure to read them and follow them.
