Kitchen Design - Window Treatments And Refacing Kitchen Cabinets

By | Dec 14, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

There are many ways you can give your kitchen a needed facelift without having to do extensive renovating, sometimes simply by re-facing kitchen cabinets or changing your kitchen window treatments. These jobs can also be done over time and in stages, which is great for the home handyman enthusiast.

It is amazing how the look of a room, in particular your kitchen, can change by simply changing your kitchen window treatments. If your kitchen is dimly lit and seems dark and subdued especially during late afternoons for example, you could give your kitchen a real lift by simply taking down fabric curtains and adding simple shades, or try using pleated shades on your windows. The same principle would apply if your kitchen looks overly busy or crowded. Take down fabric curtains and replace them with something clean, crisp and simple. Roman shades made out of bamboo are currently a hot favorite, and they add brightness and light to a room.

Perhaps you are having a problem with too much light coming into the kitchen. It is common for kitchens to have a lot of windows and this can sometimes make the kitchen too hot or too bright, especially when sunlight is streaming through the windows. If that is the case with your kitchen, you can soften the light coming in by filtering it through bamboo blinds, or woven wood shades.

Finally, if buying new window treatments take special note of the color of the treatments. Not only do you need to match the rest of your kitchen and home décor, but you can also get other great effects from choosing the correct colored blinds or shutters. Light colors will help a small kitchen look bigger and more airy. Dark colors can help an oversized kitchen look homier.

Similar principles apply when refacing kitchen cabinets. Re-facing cabinets is definitely a lot less expensive than buying and installing brand new cabinets and unless your kitchen is huge, you could probably get it all taken care of in a weekend. Again, by paying attention to the color and grain of the veneer or plywood you use for the external surfaces of your cabinets you can either give your kitchen a totally new look.

Not only are you improving the look of your kitchen when you reface your kitchen cabinets and change your kitchen window treatments but you are also adding to the resale value of your home, should you decide to sell it at any time. The investment of time you make by doing either of these tasks will certainly pay off in the long run.
