Kitchens are one of the most used rooms in the home. They are often considered to be the heart of a house. When families get together people tend to congregate in this room while work and conversation happens. When a home is sold kitchens and bathrooms are the two rooms which can make or break a real estate deal. Having an updated, attractive, and functional kitchen will encourage prospective buyers to add make a higher offer in order to ensure that they get the house.

Kitchen Decorating

Decorating a kitchen can be a challenge. The room needs to remain functional once the decorating process is finished. There will need to be plenty of workspace, storage, and appliances that can be used easily and efficiently. Kitchen decorating often starts with decided the best color to paint. Kitchen colors should be warm and inviting. A cold and sterile room that does not feel inviting will chase people out of the room in search of a more relaxing environment. Yellow is a popular color for a kitchen, but any color can be used as long as it encourages people to sit and relax.

Another big consideration when decorating a kitchen is the size of the room. Small kitchens, known as galley kitchens, simply do not have the space for large groups of people to work and visit together. These small rooms need to be decorated with thought given to the lack of space. Too much clutter and a cozy galley kitchen can turn into a nightmare to work in. If the kitchen is too small for a table, hopefully the house includes a dining room. Dining rooms are rooms that are usually located off the kitchen where a table can be placed for eating.

Kitchen Appliances

Kitchen appliances are separated into two main groups. Major kitchen appliances such as the refrigerator and stove, and minor appliances which include the microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and any other small electrical cooking gadgets. You might be able to get away with not having a blender, but a kitchen without a stove is pretty lame. There's really no point in having a kitchen if you can't cook in it. You might as will just hang out in your closets and call it a night.

Kitchen Storage

Another important part of the layout of this room is the storage situation. Kitchen storage is an extremely important part of kitchens. There are two main types of storage. Kitchen cabinets are located above the countertops and are used to hold dry goods, canned goods, seasonings, and dishes. Kitchen cabinets should be plentiful enough to hold everything that needs to be stored for the preparation of meals. A kitchen pantry is a smaller room that is used for the storage of food. This can be a tiny closet with wire shelving or a large room with many shelving units. I really like pantries. I find them to be very useful because my cabinets tend to get messy but I can keep a pantry neatly stocked.

Kitchen Countertops

Kitchen Countertops are surprisingly important to people when they are choosing a new house. Currently the most popular material for countertops is granite. A lot of counter space is needed in most kitchens. If you want to make biscuits you don't want to have to move a bunch of stuff out of the way in order to use that fancy French rolling pin. There are also standalone workspaces called kitchen islands. These islands are usually centrally located and are easy to work on because you can get to all sides of the island. They are pretty easy to keep clean and you don't end up with a bunch of crumbs hiding in the corner. Kitchen countertops should be attractive and easy to maintain. They should be sealed against possible staining if made of a porous material.

Kitchen Floor

Kitchen floors are almost always a hard flat surface. You might be able to use carpeting in living rooms and bedrooms but in the kitchen a carpet is just a bottle of A-1 sauce away from disaster. I've never actually had a carpeted kitchen, but I can imagine the problems cleaning them. Kitchen floors can be made of hardwood, tile, stone, or laminate. There are some gorgeous flooring choices out there for homeowners who want to redo the floor. The choice of flooring is normally limited by personal taste and budget. We might all like to have that fancy hand painted Mexican tile but most of use simply cannot afford it.

As it is possibly the most important room of the house a lot of thought will need to go into a kitchen's design, whether it is a new house that is built to your specifications of an older home that is getting a facelift. Kitchens are expensive to do and even more expensive to re-do.
