How Is Your Life Serving You? 

It really pays to know what you want so that you can lead a more fulfilled life. If you find your life is stagnating, going nowhere and in need of a change, start to take steps to make changes and turn your life around for the better.

So often we get stuck in a rut and we don’t know what to do to make changes. We continue to live within our comfort zone just because it’s easier. A simple way towards a more satisfying life is to visualise the things we want, set some goals and then take action to make them happen. Sounds easy huh? It is, but so many people fail to put this into practice.

Start by taking these steps below now and live the life you want. Find a quiet, comfortable place where you will not be disturbed. Make sure you have a pen and paper to hand.

Brainstorm Ideas

Spend about 20 minutes brainstorming ideas and jot down everything you would like to do, be or have. Don’t think about it - just note everything that comes to mind without attaching any value to it, i.e. don’t think you can’t do X because you can’t afford it or you can’t be Y because you don’t have the experience. Be bold and be brave. Assume that there is nothing you cannot do, be or have.


Once you have a list of the things you would like to do, be or have, then review this and put them into an order of priority. Again don’t attach any meaning to them. 

Take a new sheet of paper and write what you would most like to do, be or have at the top of the sheet, then continue to rank each idea until you have gone through your brainstorming list of ideas. Include the date on which you would like to achieve each point. 

Before starting the next step take a 5 minute break.


Look at the top three things that you would like to do, be or have. Write down the reasons why you do not have these things in your life right now and what has stopped you from achieving these things in the past. 

Be clear of your reasons and the obstacles that are preventing you from reaching your desires. 

So for instance, if your top item is to change careers because you hate what you do, your reasons for not doing so could be:

  • I will have to start all over again
  • I don’t have the financial capacity to do this
  • I don’t know what I want to do
  • I’m too old, etc, etc. 

Next, think about what you can actually do to overcome these reasons. It will help to brainstorm the answers without evaluation. Write down everything that comes to mind that would help you overcome the obstacles, such as:

  • sign up to some taster courses in things that you are passionate about or are interested in to help you find out what you might like to do next
  • start to save some money whilst in your current job as you might not be earning as much when you start your new career
  • seek a life/career coach to help you discover your highest potential
  • join networking groups to get ideas
  • tell your friends and families and enlist in their support

Remember, when you are in this kind of position and you really want to make a change you might have to start with small baby steps. 

Keep going until you feel you have run out of ideas. Don’t worry about how silly some of them might sound. The next step is to evaluate them. In some cases the modification of an idea that might sound silly at first could be the one that holds the solution! Once you have evaluated the ideas start to draw up a plan of how to do the things you most want to, or can, do first.

Plan Of Action

The last step is to put it all into an action plan. It is important to do this NOW rather than waiting for the “right moment”. Now is always the best time to take action!

Whilst you focus on the big plans you can also look at doing some of the smaller plans now. Select a few activities that you know you can do over the next month that are free to do and won’t cost you anything. These little steps will help to propel you forward and give you the motivation to keep moving in that direction. 

When you start to see progress you will start to notice success.

This process can be applied to any areas of your life that you would like to change. Just find some quiet time and ask yourself what you want and what you can do to achieve this. Use the brainstorming technique to help you and go through the steps above to come up with a list of great ideas.
