LASIK Eye Surgery Cost
I have many friends that have taken the time and endured the surgeon's knife to experiment with LASIK surgery. For those of you who are not aware with this procedure I will lay it out in laymen's terms. Some people have poor eyesight that can be fixed through the use of laser eye surgery. The surgeon goes into the patient's eye and makes slight modifications to the lens, thereby clearing up the sight of the patient and helping to improve their quality of life. Sounds simple, but it is not. The men and women that perform these types of procedures are trained and highly qualified eye surgeons that have a deep understanding of the procedure, and all of the risks that are inherent with it.
Many times I have wondered about the benefit to someone like me. If you have seen my profile you know that I am not a spring chicken, but I don't have one foot in the grave yet either. I am young enough that I think I could see a decent return on investment from undergoing the procedure (no pun intended), but at the same time I have to ask myself if it is worth the costs and potential risks. Yes, surprise, this procedure is not performed for free. While laser eye surgery cost will not drive most folks into the poor house, it isn't cheap either. In my area, the cost averages right around $1200 per eye. Not too bad, but not chump change either. I am sure in more metropolitan areas the cost is higher (as is everything else in those places). So the first question you will have to ask is, does the cost of having my eyes restored outweigh the actual cost of the procedure and associated downtime?
Next you should ask yourself if you are comfortable with the risks that are associated with any type of surgery, even one so seemingly simple as having your eyesight corrected. My optometrist is actually the one that turned me on to some of the potential dangers that are associated with this procedure. He said that he has seen patients' first hand where their corneas did not reattach properly. I don't know about you…but that is not how I want to go through the remainder of my adult life.
So, if you are in the market for LASIK eye surgery you should take the time to evaluate both the cost of LASIK eye surgery and the risks that are associated with the procedure. That way, when you go in for the procedure it is with both eyes open (sorry, couldn't resist) and there shouldn't be any surprises.
