Rent or Buy a Surfboard

There are many places you can rent a surfboard, and you'll see some of them listed later in this article.  In fact, it is common to rent a surboard while you are taking surfing lessons.  However, if you want to buy a surfboard, there are shops in Laguna Beach, and the other nearby beach towns that will have surfboards for sale.  In addition, you can buy one in advance from places like Amazon.com.  Amazon sells them for a wide range of prices, from less than $200 to several hundred dollars.

Surf Lessons and Surfboard Rentals at La Vida Laguna in Laguna Beach

If you are planning a trip to Laguna Beach, one place you may want to contact is La Vida Laguna. They have a website at lavidalaguna.com or you can call them at 949-275-7544. They have three locations to serve you.

One popular option with La Vida Laguna is their 2 hour private lesson. These lessons include the use of a soft foam surfboard and a wetsuit. Their instructors will teach you safety, the proper method for paddling out to the waves, and the pop-up techniques. This lesson will give you the basic skills to get started as a surfer. After that, you'll feel prepared to do what it takes to master any new skill ... practice, practice, practice! And, what better location for all this hard work than the beautiful beaches of Southern California?

In addition to their private lessons, La Vida Laguna also offers a surf camp for kids. This is a great way for them to learn water safety and how to surf correctly.

In order to take private or group lessons from La Vida Laguna, you must be at least 8 years old, and know how to swim. Their instructors are first-aid certified.

Surf Lessons at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel

Just south of Laguna Beach, at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, you can also take surfing lessons. This is especially convenient if you or your family are planning a surfing vacation in Southern California and will be staying at the Ritz-Carlton or one of the other nearby luxury resorts.

The Ritz-Carlton offers their Billabong Surf Camp, and they have half day, full day and overnight surf adventures. You will receive individualized lessons from one of their instructors (2 hours for a half day; 4 hours for the full day or overnight adventures). They provide you with the use of a wetsuit, surfboard, leash, wax and other surf equipment.

Laguna Beach Surfing Locations

With such a variety of surf schools in and around Laguna Beach, you should not have any problem finding the correct surf spots where you can happily enjoy your sport. However, if you are an experienced surfer, and you are just looking for the best places to surf without attending a surf school, the town of Laguna Beach has certain specific beach areas which are designated for surfers. This helps protect both the surfers and the casual swimmers, by giving them some separation. The surfing beaches are listed as: Pearl Street (Agate Beach), Brook's Street, Thalia Street, St. Ann's, and Rockpile. If you have any questions about surfing in these areas, check with the lifeguard on duty. If you do not see a lifeguard in the stand, you can go to the main lifeguard station, which is located at Main Beach, at the intersection of the PCH and Broadway in central Laguna Beach, and they will be happy to point out the correct areas for surfing.

Once you have had your Laguna Beach surfing lessons, you may also want to drive up the coast a few miles from Laguna Beach, and try your hand surfing at The Wedge in Newport Beach, or even spend a day at Huntington Beach, the famous "Surf City." Have a great time during your California surfing vacation!
