Lake Nantahala: A Smoky Mountain Vacation

Lake Nantahala was created in 1942 to provide electricity for World War II preparations. It is tucked away at 3000 feet in the Nantahala Forest. It has crystal clear water with 42 miles of shoreline. For fisherman you will find an abundance of walleye, crappie, bass, trout and sunfish. There is a public access area and also many rental and charter fishing outfits within the area. For those who prefer fly fishing or spin casting the Nantahala River is the place to hit for trout fishing.
There are many rental cabins available as well as campgrounds for both tents and rvs. You can go spend a week and feel like have been in a summer paradise right on the water.
The Nantahala River offers white water rafting for every level of experience for the beginner to the most advanced paddler. There are guided tours available where the guide is right in your raft. There are family oriented tours so the kids experience the joy of riding the river. This is just one more reason why choosing the Nantahala Lake and River as your summer vacation destination.
For those that prefer a little less active adventure the landscape is breathtaking with its numerous water falls. As the Nantahala Forest lies along the Blue Ridge Escarpment there are tall rounded mountains and high plateaus. There are miles of hiking trails both for the novice and experienced hiker or backpacker. Take in the mountain views or cascading waterfalls tucked in the giant escarpment.
