Lamps

By Edited Aug 6, 2016 1 1

Lamps are stand alone and movable luminaires. They are not as mobile as lanterns but they are not fixed to walls or ceilings. They normally plug into a wall but are since they are not mounted on the wall they can be moved around if needed.

Lamps include a light source, which are called light bulbs. Light bulbs come in many shapes, sizes, and watts and each type of lamp will require a certain type of bulb. These bulbs include fluorescent, incandescent, or LED bulbs.

Lamp shades are used to diffuse the light from the light bulb. This helps to light a larger area with a single bulb. A bulb without a shade lights a much smaller area than one that is assisted by a shade.

Lamps need a way to connect to a power source, and they connect via a power cord. The power cord plugs into a wall outlet which transfers power from the house to the lamp. They also should have a switch to turn them on and off as needed.

Types of Lamps

Desk Lamps

Desk lamps are made to sit on a desk. They are smaller than floor lamps and sometimes have some way to direct the light to where the light is needed. Desks are places where people do tasks which require more light than they might receive from a ceiling light. People write or do crafts at desks for long periods of time and one way to lessen the strain of these tasks is to have a well lit work area.

Country Lamps

Country lamps are a style. These lamps are decorative but not too fancy. Country lamps can be used in kitchens or cabins. They can be made of many different materials, but should look pretty simple. They might have an old fashioned appearance or incorporate nature and animals in their design. Newer country lamps may be distressed to give them an older appearance.

Antique Lamps

Antique Lamps are old. There are many styles of antique lamps and they are normally used to accent a room that is decorated in a style from a certain time period. These lamps can be simple or ornate depending upon which style they are. Antique Victorian lamps have a lot of detail and the shades are often made from unusual materials. Antique Mission lamps on the other hand are simple in design but no less attractive.

Ceramic Lamps

Ceramic lamps have a ceramic base. This base can be made in many different shapes and colors. Ceramic is breakable and often glossy. Ceramic lamps can be molded into many different forms and painted in any color with any design that the manufacturer can think of. These lamps can be modern in appearance or distressed to give an antique look to them.

Table Lamps

Table lamps are small lamps that are intended to sit on a table. This could be an end table or bedside table. These lamps are normally decorative and give off less light than a large glaring ceiling light. Using the right table lamps can accent a room and improve its décor.

Floor Lamps

Floor lamps are larger than table lamps and are used to light most of a room. The sit on the floor, have a tall frame, and are topped by a decorative lamp shade. When a room does not have a ceiling light and is too large to be lit by a table lamp, floor lamps are the way to go. As with other lamps they are normally both decorative and functional. A floor lamp may not be able to light a room completely by itself and additional light sources can be used in conjunction with a floor lamp.

Modern Lamps

Modern lamps are used to accent a clean and highly polished modern décor. The modern style is full of sleek and shiny surfaces as well as geometric shapes. Simple forms are the cornerstone of modern lamps. The modern style is a pullback from the ornate and fussy styles that brought in the 20th century. The lack of frills and tassels does not mean that a modern lamp is less attractive but that the form itself is decorative enough to not need all the frills.

Lamps are extremely important in our home life. These simple objects are often overlooked. They brighten and cheer up the home environment while giving us a warm light to see by. Adding a decorative lamp or three to a room will improve the way a room looks, give us additional light when we want to read, or help us to get to the bathroom without stubbing a toe.

Lamps can be used in any room of the house. The can spotlight a work of art or be the work of art themselves. They are just one of the modern conveniences that we take for granted and seldom think about.
