Larabars: The Healthiest Snack Bars Ever?

What is a Larabar?

Larabars are bars that are made of unsweetened fruits, nuts and various spices.  The ingredients in the bar are mashed or chopped and then pressed together to make a bar. Their products have less than nine ingredients (and as we know, the fewer ingredients, typically the healthier the product). Larabars have taken the celebrity world by storm with its delicious taste, convenience for eating on the go and its healthiness due to its nutritional benefits. 

Did you know? When Laura, the creator of Larabar, tested her bars on friends and family originally for testing purposes, there was no name for the bars. Thus, people started referring to them as Laura's bars. Eventually, this evolved into the bar that we know today, "Larabar".

What flavors of Larabar are there?

Larabar is currently available in the following flavors:

  • Apple Turnover, Bananas Foster, Cherry Cobbler, Roasted Nut Roll, Apple Pie, Banana Bread, Blueberry Muffin, Cappuccino, Carrot Cake, Cashew Cookie, Cherry Pie, Chocolate Chip Brownie, Chocolate Chip CHerry Torte, CHocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Coconut Chew, Coconut Cream Pie, Ginger Snap, Key Lim Pie, Lemon Bar, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Cookie, Pecan Pie, Tropical Fruit Tart

Larabar also has a sub- brand of bars called Jocolat, which are chocolate flavored bars:

  • Chocolate, Chocolate Coffee, Chocolate Hazelnut, Chocolate Mint

Note: Some of the Larabar flavors and all of the Jocolat flavors are not available in Canada at this time.

What's in a Larabar?

The ingredients in a Larabar depend on the flavor. However, there are no more than nine ingredients in each Larabar and each bar is made with only natural ingredients. One of their most popular flavors, Cherry Pie, contains date fruit, almonds and unsweetened cherries. Another popular flavor, Peanut Butter Cookie, contains only three ingredients as well: peanuts, dates, and sea salt. Does it sound too good to be true? Well, it isn't! The bars are truly only made of natural ingredients.

Each Larabar has a generous serving of at least a quarter cup of fruit. Some of the flavors, including tropical fruit tart, apple pie and cherry pie have half a cup of fruit in each bar. There is no added sugar in any of the Larabars. Healthy, no?

What does a Larabar taste like?

Although the taste of the Larabar depends on the flavor that you choose, generally the bars have a more subtle flavor and are not overly sweet, which is refreshing. The Larabars can have a more salty

 or sweet flavor depending on the flavor that you choose. For instance, the coconut cream pie bars (made of dates, unsweetened coconutm almonds, cashews and extra virgin coconut oil) has a sweeter taste without being overly nutty, while the  cashew cookie (made of cashews and dates) has a slightly saltier taste due to the cashews. Note that although some of their bars do have dates, the date flavor is not very strong as there are other ingredients mixed into the bar. As for the texture, the bars are moist and chewy, providing a comforting treat for the mouth. 

Despite the simple and natural ingredients used to make the bars, they are delicious. As an anecdote, multiple people thought they they were eating a chocolate bar! It goes to show that eating healthy can mean eating deliciously as well. 

How healthy is the Larabar?

As mentioned, there are no artificial ingredients in a Larabar. Each Larabar only contains natural ingredients. Here is some basic nutritional information for their most popular bars:

Apple Pie - per bar (45g) contains 190 calories, 5 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein

Peanut Butter Cookie - per bar (45g) contains 220 calories and has 4 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein

Cherry Pie - per bar (45g) contains 200 calories, 5 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein

Larabars are very filling when you're hungry and in a rush to go somewhere. People also like eating the Larabar after they exercise to help their muscles repair. Many people, including celebrities, see Larabars as fitting into a healthy and fit lifestyle.

Can I eat the Larabar if I have dietary restrictions?

Larabar ingredients are processed in a way that they are friendly for consumption for people who have dietary needs that include:

gluten free, dairy free, soy free, natural ingredients, vegan, koher, no added sugars/sweeteners, no added sulfits, no preservatives, fillers or colourings

Note that the chocolate chip flavors are not included in being dairy free, soy free, vegan or free of sugars/sweeteners.
