Laser Hair Removal Machines
Laser hair removal is another accepted hair removal treatment because of its efficiency and results. The machines that were developed for hair removal were available to the commercial market in 1970's. This light-based method is also called photo-epilation or photo-tricholysis. Lasers are capable of specifically targeting dark areas or melanin and follicles that cause growth of the hair without affecting other skin areas that do not need to be treated with the process.
The light that is emitted from the laser is being absorbed by the skin's melanin and the technology behind it is that light is easily absorbed with speed and intensity by dark objects. There are different types of laser hair removal machines that are designed specifically for the type of treatment that is needed.
Here are some of the types of hair removal laser machines available:
Diode Laser hair removal machines
This is the most effective of all laser types. The emission of the laser lights are boosted with the power of the small diodes. Semiconductors are arranged along with diodes for the production of a laser beam. This type of laser has better results compared to other lasers especially with darker skin complexions as it has longer wavelengths. It can penetrate deeper down into the hair follicles and successfully treat the base at which the hair growth starts. Unfortunately, there are some patients that develop a skin allergy called urticaria with this type of laser. Urticaria is a skin reaction like hives, but it must be treated with medication and therapy.
Alexandrite Laser
It is a long pulse laser. It is capable of penetrating down to the dermis of the skin. The laser light produces heat to kill or deactivate the hair follicle from its active state. The follicle will let go of the hair and this results in effective hair removal. The result is shorter, but instances of side effects were cited in less that 2% of treated patients with dark colored skin.
Q-Switched Laser hair removal machines
This laser type emits two lights of different wavelengths in which one is an invisible infrared light and the other is a green. The infrared is for a deeper penetration of the skin while the green light is to treat the hair follicles nearer to the surface. This laser hair removal machine produces a sudden burst of light on the area to be treated. Since this type of laser has a longer pulse duration or pulse rate, it is capable of cooling the epidermis which greatly reduces the chance of burning. The skin treated with this later type will have delayed time for hair regrowth and is effective for dark colored skin types too.
Ruby laser
This laser produces a red-colored light that directly targets the melanin on the shaft of the hair connecting to the hair follicles. This is best used for patients who have light colored skin and darker hair because it specifically hits the melanin stored on the skin. The resulting hair removal is long term. There are laser hair removal machines of this type that have built in cooling which lessen the chance of getting burns and other side effects.
Using lasers for hair removal can have some normal side effects after the treatment. These side effects include redness of skin, itchiness and sometimes swelling on the treated area. These effects can be treated easily with minor attention and will only last for at most 3 days.
Hair removal lasers are not only effective in removing hairs. They can also be used to treat ingrown hairs or shaving bumps. Long-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers are more effective for patients with darker skin complexions as they have cooling effects that can prevent heat burns on unaffected areas. They are also used to treat pilonidal cysts. Laser hair removal machines can remove ingrown hairs that cause the body to react and form a subdermal cyst. Remember that there some precautions to take and you won't be fully informed of all of the potential side effects without consulting a practitioner. Alternatively, you can research the Federal Drug Administration's website for their detailed reports on the safety of such treatments. It is best to practice precautions and not have to find out the hard way.
When the laser was discovered, nobody knew that it would be used to treat unwanted hair. With the advance of technology you can now do home laser hair removal. There are new machines that are safe to use as long as you follow the directions. You just have to determine if the product will work for the type of hair that you are treating. If it doesn't, you can always return it and get your money back. You can save money by purchasing used laser hair removal machines off of craigslist. A machine would be a wise purchase compared to the cost of treatments. Don't you love technology?
